Ben completed a few jobs and was very quick to respond to my messages initially. I had a few complex jobs that he was not able to start or finish, such as, backed up plumbing at two separate job locations. His communication was not the best with scheduling times and twice gave up on two jobs that were two big for him instead of notifying me that he was not capable in the beginning.

I found Vaughn’s Plumbing and Draining on Thumbtack. He responded quickly to my inquiry. That same day, we had a conversation about my needs. I had a broken garbage disposal that caused a major leak under my sink, a running toilet, and a broken bathtub spout. He asked if I had a new garbage disposal or needed him to get one. I asked if he had one that he recommended. He said, “I’ll just get one. There is one that I use that I haven’t had any complaints for in over 20 years.” I asked him if he could come out the following Thursday after 3pm. He agreed. The next day, I asked if he could give me a rough estimate. He quoted me $750 ( including the purchase of the garbage disposal). I asked for the price if I got my own. He said that it would be $250.
Thursday comes. I text him to inquire if he was going to be able to make it (2 days after the snowstorm) or if we needed to reschedule. He replied that he was still coming. Around 5pm, he still hadn’t showed. I texted him to see if he was still coming. He said he thought he had come to me already. I told him he hadn’t. He apologized and said he would come the next day and give me a discount for the inconvenience.
He shows up the next day with another gentleman. They determine that the garbage disposal (1.25 hp) I purchased wouldn’t work due to it having a plug, and I had direct power coming to my garbage disposal. I asked him what I needed and would have my son go get it. He insisted that he get one, instead, and return the next morning to install. I asked him the cost. He quoted me $485 which includes his markup for going to pick it up. He tells me that after taxes it would cost me around the same. He still would not tell me what model it would be.
He showed up around 8am the next morning with the same gentleman from the day before. He brings in a garbage disposal (1/3 hp) that costs under $100, meaning his markup is around $130 for the unit. This already soured me in regard to the experience, but I really needed this situation over and done with. I should have asked them to leave when I saw the unit. A while after they got there, a third gentleman arrived. This made me a little uncomfortable, as there were now 3 people in my house to do what I know to be a fairly simple job. When they finished, I asked him the payment method he accepted. he stated that he could pretty much take anything except Venmo. He stated that if I paid by card it would be more because of “taxation” which he didn’t have control over because once you select credit card, the “taxation gonna automatically hit.” I paid using Cash App. He left. Although I wasn’t happy with what I received for what I paid, I was just ready to be done with it.
Fast forward to Monday evening. I turn on the garbage disposal for the first time. As I’m using it, it stops running. I look under the sink thinking I just need to reset it. There is food particles and water spewing all under the sink. I call him, and we FaceTime. He determines that the dishwasher hose came loose from the unit. I put it back on and tell him that it’s loose. He puts me on hold and the phone disconnects. I call him back after some time has passed. He offers to come the next morning. I explain that it would have to be very early and we all leave for work/school very early. I check with my son who will leave a little later. I ask him if he can come before 7:30am. He says that he will come for 7am “if my wife wakes me up.”
The next day comes, I make sure my son is ready to welcome him. He doesn’t show. I contact him after 7:30 and ask if he is still coming or if he can come after 7pm when we are home. He states that he will come after 7pm and to text him at 6:30pm. I shouldn’t have to text him. If he is running his business properly, he should be able to run his client management system in a proper manner.
Needless to say, he never showed up. I still don’t have use of my sink, garbage disposal, or dishwasher.
I guess I need to hire someone else to correct this issue.
