I began studying with David a little over five months ago and it has been awesome. I have many years of prior musical experience, albeit not playing piano or classical music, and his lessons have already had a significant impact on how I approach music. By applying his methodologies, I can learn and memorize new pieces much more quickly than ever before. I also feel more confident in my ability to hold deliberate and focused practice sessions, through which his concept of "mental practice" has proven extraordinarily useful.
David puts a lot of emphasis on teaching you to think critically and make your own decisions. Before my first recital, we worked on a Bach piece (WTC I prelude 3 C# Major) that pushed the limits of my technical ability. Rather than "fix" my technique on certain passages, he outlined a specific set of tools that he uses to master technically demanding phrases. I was able to play the piece much more comfortably after applying these tools to the most difficult phrases. Moving forward, I have a much clearer idea of how to acquire better technique as I further expand my repertoire. David consistently provides useful insights like these in lessons and you will find yourself becoming a much more self-sufficient musician as you incorporate his advice into your practice. As of now, we are working on a Chopin etude (Op. 25 no. 2), which didn't feel like a remote possibility before we began working together, but only speaks to how quickly we've progressed.
Finally, David puts a fair amount of work into cultivating a community among his students. There are many opportunities to perform for one another via "studio classes," where students are invited to provide commentary after each individual performance. Frequent performances are a very important element in learning and developing as a musician, and this was another reason I chose to work with David.
