Wasfi A. says, "I am very happy with the fence repair for MS Construction. Mike the owner was very prompt in his response and considering the storm we had, he said workers would be there in two days! I was very impressed. The workers he sent (Dennis and I can’t remember the other gentleman’s name) were very polite, friendly and hard working. As you can see from the photos they did an excellent job, they also did not try to upsell me and used existing wood if it was good enough to keep (see the pics). My neighbor and I are very happy with the results and I will be calling Mike for our next fence repair between us and another neighbor. I highly recommend MS Construction."See more

Michael C. says, "Building an 800 sqft detached ADU with Barcci Builders was a fantastic decision. From the initial proposal to the final touches, their professionalism and expertise were evident. The team worked diligently, adhering to the timeline and budget, which was greatly appreciated. The quality of construction is excellent, with every detail carefully considered and executed. Bar and his team provided invaluable advice and support throughout the process, making a potentially daunting project manageable and exciting. Their policy of supplying rough materials while we chose the finish materials suited our needs perfectly, allowing us to customize the ADU to our liking."See more

Yair Sida says, "BARK AND BUILD did a complete kitchen remodel, renovated two bathrooms, and replaced the entire flooring in my house. It all turned out beautifully and really refreshed my home.Throughout the project, Mike and Miki, my project mangaers, were always quick to respond and gave great advice. Whenever there were challenges or special requests, they put in a lot of effort to find solutions that worked for me.The crew made sure to pay attention to all the details we discussed. The final quality was just as important to them as it was to me. At the end of the project, we went over everything that still needed attention, and the crew took care of each item.I'd definitely recommend Bark and build Builders to my friends for their remodeling projects."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.
