I have never hired a plumber before and when the main line of the sewer in my house became plugged, I was not sure what to expect.
Dave came out on a Sunday to look at it. He gave a window of time that he would arrive. He arrived slightly later than that window. However, he said he had complications with his GPS which kept taking him to the wrong location. But, he was only slightly later than the time he gave me.
He was friendly and professional. He could not find the clean out after looking all around the house. There is one but it is underneath the house and can be accessed by crawling a short way underneath. He was not willing to do this, I suppose, since he did not end up getting access to the sewer that way. He was going to go through the drain for the kitchen sink but, when we offered to remove one of the toilets so he could put the snake through there, he decided that would be better since the pipe is a larger diameter. My fiancé took up the toilet and Dave put the snake through the sewer line there. He seemed very knowledgeable about sewer lines and suggested a couple of different options on placing a more accessible clean out.
He did not get a chance to turn on the snake, however. We needed to put some water down the line and so ran a garden hose into the house through a window. In turning on the hose, the combination of the snake and the pressure of the water must have dislodged the blockage (I am guessing at this since he did not actually turn on the snake) and the water seemed to be running out just fine. We flushed the toilets and turned on the shower all at the same time and there was no water coming back at us.
Dave gave us the option of going ahead with the snake, for the price he had quoted, or just leaving it alone for a discounted rate. He seemed to be cautious about using the snake since he was concerned that it might get hung up on roots in the line and thus get stuck in the drain. Since the water seemed to be flowing, we opted for the discounted rate which I paid using a check.
He gathered up his materials (the snake) and spent some time talking with us before he left. He seemed very knowledgeable and said that if we wanted to add a clean out in the future, and we did some of the labor, he would work with us on the cost.
I appreciate that he was willing to come out on a Sunday and that he was willing to give us a discounted rate since he did not really have to use his equipment. He was friendly and polite, even considering how unprepared we were to have a workman around. I was a little disappointed that he did not seem willing to use the clean out that we already had and that my fiancé had to remove the toilet. I suppose it gets into liability issues and so it is not his policy. Anyway, the problem has not recurred. I would use Dave's services again. He seem to be fair in his pricing and my knowledge about what to expect when hiring a plumber has grown.
