What is a boot camp class?
Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.
Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.
How much is a boot camp?
The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. I have had a few trainers over the years, and none of them have been so comfortable that they choose to overstep boundaries or say things that are rude and ignorant.
As a business owner, you can run your business however you see fit. Nonetheless, that does not give you the right to be careless and offensive. Theresa comes off as nice person, but she has very poor communication skills, she is not aware of the things that she says or how she over steps boundaries.
The comment that she made to me was she did not consider me to be “Black Black” I asked her what she meant and she just said, “well you know what I mean you’re Black, but you’re not BLACK”.
The undertone of this comment means that I do not present as how she ignorantly and typically thinks Black people show up which is low class, ignorant, and ghetto. This is extremely offensive. What is black black? There is no race, culture, or nationality of people that are a monolith, so why would you even think it’s OK to say that?
Not only that, but I came in with a different hairstyle, I wear extensions just like a lot of other women and she tried to touch on my hair as if I was a pet.
She didn’t even ask before hand, she just came up to me and tried to touch me in the middle of working out completely overstepping my boundaries.
I’m a paying client and there is no reason why you should feel so comfortable to touch me in any way that does not have to do with these workouts or say things that are so inappropriate and ignorant.
African-American woman deal with people constantly coming up to us and touching on our hair or our bodies as if we are in a zoo without even asking permission first and it is not OK just because it has been made to seem normal or it’s not a big deal to someone else. There is no religion, other Culture or Nationality where they let their boundaries and rules be known and people just completely ignore and disrespect them. As a Black woman We also have cultural rules as well, and they should also be respected.
My issue is when I brought these things to her attention instead of listening, responding, and being accountable she over talked me and argued with me the whole time. Completely trying to dismiss everything that I was saying. Even if she did not understand or agree, she ultimately didn’t even want to acknowledge the main point which was; she was making me uncomfortable with her comments and she was overstepping my boundaries.
The most ignorant and annoying thing you can say to another minority or marginalized group is, “I also have Black friends or Muslim friends or Gay friends etc and THEY don’t have a problem when I do these things”, and that’s exactly what she said.
My response to that was, “I am a paying client I’m not your friend and you do not know me.”
Again, instead of being professional she tried to make it seem as if I was being overly sensitive, which is the problem. She had absolutely no respect or care for how she made me feel or how she was coming off. Since she does not care how she presents herself as she runs her business and interacts with clients from other cultures, races and nationalities, I have no problem letting people know what my experience was while I worked with her.
I was training with her for 3 months.
My previous trainer I was with for many years, but he was an hour drive from me, and it was beginning to be too much while I was recovering.
For context, he is Thai & always treated me with Respect. I feel it’s important to note this because Theresa is also a minority so I would hope she would be more aware of how she’s acting.
After we spoke on the phone about how she was making me uncomfortable, instead of giving me a call or speaking to me at our next session, she sent me a message which I attached below then blocked me, which again shows you how unprofessional she is.
I completely understand if she did not want to risk doing something unknowingly that might be offensive, I already started looking for another trainer, but there’s also a better way to do things especially as a professional. She clearly didn’t care and you can tell by the way she even started the message and that’s completely fine.
Pro:
Her home gym is in a nice area, it’s clean, & she will tailor your workouts however you need.
She will also be flexible with you if you need to reschedule.
Overall Cons:
She works with an assistant, but she also does a lot of other things at her gym as well so she will pawn you off on the assistant if she does not have time and she will not communicate that to you.
I had to tell her assistant as well as have a conversation with her about communicating with me because I paid to have my sessions with Theresa not with a random person that she works with.
She told me she would even let the assistant know about my injuries and what I’m working on, but she never did. I had to inform the assistant myself. The assistant told me that Theresa never mentioned anything to her about what my goals were, or where I was at on my workout journey. Mind you I am recovering from an ACL tear.
Theresa did ask me if it was ok to work with the assistant while she was on vacation which I said was fine, but once she had come back the assistant let me know that I was now her client. This is after I already had a conversation with Theresa where she flat out asked me if I wanted to continue with the assistant or have her as my main trainer and I let her know I prefer to work with Theresa not with the assistant. Instead of communicating with me she just gave me to the assistant and didn’t say anything at all. It seems like communication is a really big problem for her and she gets very overwhelmed with her schedule.
The gym is in a nice area, but there’s no bathroom. It gets really hot and you need to play your own music in order to keep your energy up because she can be quiet and have you working out in silence. Music isn’t a big deal, but your trainer should bring a certain energy.
The two stars are for the price, location quality & the workouts themselves can be tailored to anything you need to meet your goals.
