General Contracting

  • 1 hire on Thumbtack
  • Serves Houston, TX
Dean K. says, "My wife and I wanted to remodel our kitchen. Archer Pro was the fourth contractor we consulted and their explanation how the remodel would be done and their explanation of our options, caused us to select Archer Pro. Our house was built in the mid '70's and the kitchen we had, was pretty much the original kitchen. We had the entire lower counter demolished and a new counter built from ground up with a new granite counter top, tile back splash and all new appliances. Unlike the other contractors who were going to build cabinets, drawers and doors off site and merely install them, Archer Pro had a skilled carpenter on site to build a new counter top from ground up, complete with soft close drawers and cabinet doors, using quality lumber with poplar wood for the facing of the drawers and doors. New sink, new framed-in micro-wave, stove/oven, ducted evacuation fan and light above the stove, dish washer, and garbage disposal, all new, were installed. The cabinets above the counter were in good shape, so they were sanded, refurbished and new doors for all were made, so the doors for the upper cabinets matched the doors and drawers for the newly-built counter below. All wood was sanded, sealed, primed twice, sanded a second time and given two coats with a nice oil-based paint and a nice crown molding was installed all around the top of the new kitchen. The project was completed in a little under 3 weeks and my wife and I are totally pleased. I would not hesitate to use Archer Pro again for any future projects."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a good carpenter in Houston?

Search online to find the best carpenters in Houston. Depending on your project, you may need a custom cabinet maker, a framing contractor, or a trim or finish carpenter. For larger projects, you can even hire a general contractor who’ll be able to coordinate the work.

Before you hire, look for positive customer reviews and high ratings on their online profiles. Feel free to ask to see examples of the carpenter’s previous projects, and ask how long they’ve been in business. And don’t forget to compare prices among local pros by requesting cost estimates from at least three of them.

How do I hire the best general contractor in Houston?

You can find general contractors in Houston by searching online. Read reviews from past customers and look for photos of completed projects. You may also find information about their credentials on their profiles, or you can try verifying a general contractor’s license by visiting the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website.

Before you hire a contractor, ask for a cost estimate from several pros in Houston. Hiring a contractor to work on your home is an important decision, so feel free to take your time and compare quotes from a few pros.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?
