Be aware that Gem is just a contractor, and technicians from a different named company will come out to your house, just FYI.
The Mazal technician guys that showed up were in & out in a little over an hour. I was excited to have the chimney cleaned finally after about 25+ years! Who knows how long we had been poisoning ourselves.
I was pretty satisfied at first, even though I had to provide trash bags, a flashlight and a broom (would have thought they would carry their own).
After they finished their 'deep clean', they cleaned up after themselves and departed.
A few days later I had another crew come out for a quote on a different part of the chimney I realized the first team wasn't exactly great.
The first thing the new crew asked was when we last had the chimney cleaned - I told him last week. He gave me a funny look and took pictures, showing where the last crew (Gem) had not at all done a thorough job. He did one scrape with his brush and tons of soot/debris fell down. He asked how much they charged, I told him they charged $750 for a deep clean and he was like WOW that is outrageous. He did a courtesy second cleaning for me and resurfaced the cracks in the fireplace box, then resealed it - all for less than half of what Gem charged me.
I recently got off the phone with Gem customer service as they were following up with me, I told them it was surprising that they don't warn people that they contract out the work and how the Mazal guys did a subpar job.
I actually just spoke with the Mazal guy as I was typing and he's offering to give me a free cleaning next year. I am not usually the type to reverse charges on a credit card but I was very close to doing so. I'm glad he made an effort to make things right & apologize.
Just telling other Thumbtack customers to beware and get everything in writing.
