The guy came and checked my dryer duct to see if there was blockage. He said there was, and then after talking to his boss, told me it would cost $600 to do. I was shocked but I’ve never had this done before. So I said yes. As he was walking away he told me he would be done in 20 minutes. My mind started spinning. He was not replacing anything, so no parts. So all labor. I figured that he was charging me $1800 an hour. That’s 20 minutes at 600. 3 times 600 is 1800, After counting my figures and toes. I thought what in the world could he be doing to charge that much. He told me the prices were determined by his boss. Not sure if I believe he had a boss. So I watched what he was doing. He had a drill with a three foot flexible rod with a cleaning type thing at the end. He stuck that through the duct and turned on drill. He told me the blockage was in the duct that attaches from the dryer to the wall. He said the blockage was out and showed me enough lint and dust that would accumulate in dryer after three loads. He said that was a lot and I said it was definitely not a lot. I’m not an expert in clogged ducts but have enough brains to know that little bit of lint couldn’t clog my arteries. He came up with a story that most don’t realize how little bit of dust can block it. I laughed. He was a nice guy but reminded me of a used car salesman. Suffice it to say after arguing with the guy I told him there is no way this job could cost $600. He cleaned out the duct that I could have replaced for $25 or less. I told him why not just do that and he said that’s not my job. He’d rather charge $600 to clear a blockage that did not exist.
I try to trust people in the beginning which I know is wrong. I’m older and remember when repair man would come to your house and do a job and not try to fleece you. Those days are gone and I’ve determined that YouTube will be my guide and I will do it all myself. I’ll try not to rip myself off.
