My kids are 7 and 10 and I am in my fifties, all starting from absolute zero. He had to teach three different styles, but he is made for this. He is extremely patient with the kids and always encouraging, and he is quick to adapt his teaching method and language to the student. He is an accomplished musician and I know that I am a pretty slow student, but he never makes me feel dumb or guilty. He always finds something you are doing right, and builds on that. He is also very responsive and generous with his time and he goes above and beyond to make sure you get the help that you need, even outside of his teaching schedule. I specialize in teaching techniques of improvisation to classical and jazz pianists. Backed up by my extensive, 42-year background composing and playing music for modern dance and ballet as well as 30 years of playing jazz and rock in casual and professional bands. I use Indian classical and "Greek modes" to teach melodic improvisation and "cyclic sequences" as taught (by Nadia Boulanger and others) to many of the great American classical composers in the early 20th century to familiarize classical and jazz pianists with the landscape and structures of the written music they are playing. Learning these patterns of melody and harmony gives the classical musicians a wider experience of the music they play as well as jazz musicians. These exercises help in memorization and can give the classical pianist the wherewithal to pull themselves out of memory slips, create their own music and to experientially understand the landscape of the music they perform.See more

She's funny, patient, kind and will customize the lesson to what the student wants to achieve. In my case, I want to learn to be able to play songs from certain genres, not classic music. I find the Alfred beginner books boring, so she teaches me from songs instead. She teaches me how to improvise the songs with cords, and other fun techniques. Her lessons are always fun, and sometimes we laugh til I cry. I think if my kids have met Irene , they would have stayed with playing the piano. I love Irene and give her my highest recommendation."See more
