My young son knocked into my laptop and my USB flash drive snapped off and cracked apart into 3 pieces. (Ironically, I had it out in the open just to make a backup of it!) My life was on this drive, from irreplaceable photos, to work financials, creative writing pieces for a book contribution, and medical records. I could barely sleep at all, wondering if I’d ever see these files again.
I had a few IT friends who said they could “try to look at it,” but while working in/around the IT arena if there’s one thing I know: leave it to the pros because you may only have one good shot at recovery.
I inquired at my local cell/iPad repair store, and they outsource to a datarecovery place elsewhere for issues like this; they quoted me $750-1K with additional $ added if I needed it “rush” in less than 72 hours.
I started googling and came across an app and website called thumbtack, which I hadn’t heard of before. I figured I’d look to see if I could find a testimonial from someone in the same boat; maybe I’d find someone who could truly help.
And that I did. Phil from Shaw Computer Services had a stellar review history and online reputation, and he specializes in datarecovery. One or two of the reviewers had the exact problem I had; and others had far worse losses...but they all sang his praises. He wasn’t a Geek Squad with mixed reviews, or a “We Fix Every Device You Own” generalist but someone who specializes in datarecovery.
I put in my request late on a Wednesday night, and Thursday morning at 7:30am I received a response. Based on my description of the damage, he felt relatively confident he could help. His prices were *far* more reasonable than the ones quoted to me beforehand. He even said that if he couldn’t retrieve the data, I owed him nothing! So I had nothing to lose that I didn’t lose already, in my mind. He even recommended hand delivery if possible, rather than mailing it, which aligned perfectly with my high anxiety and trust issues about preventing further damage or loss.
I was coming from VA, though, which was going to be a hike. And we couldn’t be certain how long the repair/recovery process would be. But I realized I was heading to Philly for a quick overnight visit and would pass Ellicott City. We spoke on the phone, and he agreed to make himself available on a Saturday at 3 for a drop-off, and have it ready (if retrieval was possible) for a pickup at 3 the next day, Sunday. He got his “electronics guru” who needed to solder the drive back together to help out on this quick weekend timeframe too.
I dropped off, and less than 2 hours later I got a call from him, before I even hit Philly, saying that he and his guru managed to piece the drive back together and all the files looked intact and recoverable. Oh, I was so relieved and could actually relax and enjoy my visit in Philly!
I returned the next day, he sat me down at his laptop, we double checked the files together and eureka...everything was still there! I could have cried or kissed the man, I was so happy and utterly relieved.
So this is the easiest, no brainer 5-star review I’ve ever written. From responsiveness, trustworthiness, price reasonableness, quality, professionalism, communications, and bend-over-backwards customer service, Phil of Shaw Computer Services is hands down the very best. Worth every penny and every mile driven, no matter where you’re coming from.
I’m trusting him with any data issue I ever encounter in the future, and telling all of my personal and small business friends. Trust your instincts and go with a pro: Phil and Shaw Computer Services will not steer you wrong.
