Wedding Dance Lessons

Alyse J. says, "Becca was the greatest decision we could have made for our wedding. Both my husband and I are NOT dancers, and we were extremely nervous about our first dance. We didn’t want to look like baby deer, and that’s certainly what we would have looked like without Becca’s help. Becca was incredibly patient with us as we learned very basic steps, and she helped ease us into more challenging moves with repetition and positive reinforcement. She made us feel comfortable with what we were learning and comfortable just dancing together. By the end of our lessons with Becca, we were sad that they wouldn’t continue! We learned so much from her and had such a good time doing it. She made us more confident in ourselves and each other, and certainly our dance skills! We are so thankful that we decided to have Becca help us with our first dance. It ended up being our favorite part of the evening (quite a 180 from the dread and anxiety it had caused us before). Becca is flexible and willing to choreograph a complex dance with lots of challenging moves, but is also willing to just put together the basics if you want something simple but don’t know where to start. She can do it all and will work with you to determine what you’re most comfortable with. Everyone should enjoy their first dance, and you certainly will if you hire Take the Floor! Highly recommend!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
