Introduction

In-Person (or Online) drum and piano lessons for all ages and levels, right here in Austin, TX! Emphasis is on playing, NOT talking your ear off. While you're drumming, I'll be on piano (or vice-versa). Right from the start, I want you to feel what it’s like to "play in a band." It's a lot of fun AND hones your ability to listen and keep steady time whilst rockin' out with other musicians... Lessons are tailored to your musical tastes and level of commitment... In addition to learning by ear, all my students learn how to read notation and eventually write out their own drum/piano compositions. Just wait, we'll be groovin' AND sight reading by the end of the first lesson! I love getting students ready ASAP to play with other musicians. That's what it's all about! Invite other musicians, friends and family over for our very own "Band Practice!" Need to get some songs ready for a talent show? How about a surprise concert for Dad's birthday in the backyard? Full studio complement of amps, keyboard and recording gear... My previous drum teacher moved and I found myself in the unfortunate position of looking for someone new. For me it's difficult as I'm looking for someone that can teach me the way I need to learn. I don't respond well to the old-fashioned rudiments on a practice pad routine, so I really dreaded this process. I'm also looking for someone that has a feel for the drummers I admire so they can better understand how my thought process works. For me, finding the right teacher is more than just someone that's a proficient player and can explain the lesson. It's really a relationship...the right teacher can understand where you're coming from and be able to help you achieve your goals, understand your strengths and weaknesses and connect with you in musical way. I probably read through the profile of every drum teacher in Austin, but after receiving a message from Pedro on Thumbtack, I checked out his website and I could tell somehow he was different than the other teachers I'd researched. After my first hour lesson today, I know I'm going to learn more from him than anyone I've worked with before. Pedro has a really great way about him and is genuinely interested in making you a better player. In my introductory lesson, he walked me through something I thought would take some time to get worked out but he had me playing it by the end of the hour. He's also encouraging me to work on some form issues by way of explaining why it's important and why it will make me a better player. I can really embrace logic like that as a lot of teachers will only tell you to do something this way or that way...Pedro will walk you through the process and how it can and will improve your playing. I'm probably not his typical student, but I get the feeling he teaches a fair amount of adults like me, as well as beginners of all ages. I really fought taking lesson for a long time, but if I'd found Pedro years ago, I know I would be an infinitely better player at this point in my life. If you're looking for an enthusiastic, down to earth teacher that will teach in the way you need to learn, Pedro is your guy. Already looking forward to my next lesson!

Pedro is an amazing teacher! My son hasn't stopped drumming on every surface he can. He takes the time to explain but doesn't treat my son like a baby (even though he's only 4)! So far, we couldn't be happier!

How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started playing the violin in 3rd grade in New York via the Suzuki method, eventually landing spots as first chair at my middle and high school orchestras in San Antonio, TX. At age 15, I got my first drum kit and started teaching myself playing along to Led Zeppelin, The Police, and U2 records... After 2 years as a Physics major at Amherst College, MA, I switched to Music, focusing on classical & jazz composition. I apprenticed under the great jazz drummer Billy Arnold (Springfield, MA) and studied jazz piano & music theory with Andy Jaffe (Berklee College of Music, Amherst College). Since graduating in '95, I've worked in San Francisco, Oakland, Madison, Milwaukee, and Austin, playing drums and keys, scoring original music/sound design for theater, and teaching drum lessons.
