Adrienne R. says, "JN is the rarest of heating contractors. Honest, knowledgeable with fair and transparent pricing. I have a chronic illness and spent most of my hours crouched over a space heater suffering in the cold weather. Junior came out with Felix and another incredibly competent team member. The boilers had been dormant and there was an urgent need to connect the system the new pipes to restore the heating system in the house. Junior and crew skillfully diagnosed the issue, retrofitted the unit with a transformer, inserted a T connection for the water line and unclogged the pilot so the boiler could fire up. They also performed comprehensive quality checks to ensure that there were no gas or water leaks from the lines or the boilers. They confirmed that each and every radiator connection was secure. When it was not they retooled the connection to ensure that the radiator functioned correctly and adjusted each valve to the optimal position. It was a privilege to have such pros on site. I have seen the best and the worst of heating contractors and I can attest to the fact that they are among the best. If like me you have an issue with your heating system, these are the only people you should call. Not only did they save me by coming on a Sunday, they even installed a new thermostat to ensure that I could control the temperature. Some heroes wear capes. These guys just happen to wear hoodies."See more

Shraddha S. says, "I hired RNC to adjust gas piping configuration for our newly installed gas range so that it was flush against the wall. Rob who is the main guy at RNC seemed professional and polite. He is the one I worked with to set up the appointment and make final payments and stuff. Based on the photos I sent him, he provided a rough estimate and said the technician will provide a more accurate estimate on-site. When the technician arrived (late, apparently due to traffic) he had no idea what the cost would be and asked me to connect with Rob after. The technician didn’t have the correct parts, so he went to the store to get them and was gone for an hour. He finally adjusted the pipe length and installed the new gas connectors. He asked me if I wanted the anti-trip bracket reinstalled at the back and I told him it was required by code, which I thought he should have known? Anyway, he did that and left. Soon after I noticed the stove wasn’t level at all. So I had to call Rob to send the technician back to level it. After everything, there is still a one inch gap at the back of the stove, which is annoying but much better than the 4 inch gap we had before the pipe reconfiguration. Next day morning I found out that our house heat wasn’t working. Turns out the technician had turned off the gas at the boiler but forgotten to reset the pilot, so the boiler was down all night and the house was freezing. Rob sent a friend of his to get that sorted. All in all, Rob was pretty responsive and proactive in fixing things. However the entire experience was less than ideal. The final invoice was also $50 over the upper range of the estimate because of the parts required. I may give RNC another shot in the future if Rob is doing the work himself since I see a lot of positive reviews about him here and which is why I hired them in the first place."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a heating system?

The cost of a heating system depends largely on the type and size of the heating system. For example:

To find out how much your new heating system will cost, contact heating and air companies near you and ask for free cost estimates.

What is the most common type of heating system?

The most common type of home heating system is a forced-air heating and cooling system. This type of heater involves a furnace, which is commonly powered by natural gas, forcing air through a series of ducts that distribute the hot air through different rooms in a house. Furnaces can run on other types of fuel, including electricity, propane and oil. This type of heating system is quite popular because it doubles as a path for air conditioning in the summer.

What is the most efficient heating system for a house?

Geothermal heating tends to be the most efficient way to heat a house when compared to traditional HVAC systems, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Geothermal heat pumps (also called ground-source heat pumps) transfer energy to and from the ground to supply heat, cool air and hot water.

Note that one of the most important ways to boost efficiency, save electricity and lower your heating bills is to make sure your house is weather-tight and well-insulated.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How long does it take to install a new heating system?

A new heating system generally takes a few days to install. Jobs that require new ductwork will take more time. And switching to a different type of heat fuel — propane, natural gas, oil or electricity — may require longer installation times as well, as they could require routing piping, regulators and other adjustments to your home.

When should you replace a heating system?

The better care you take of your heating system, the longer it will last. The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors estimates the following lifespans for heating systems:

  • Heat exchanger: 10-15 years
  • Heat pump: 10-15 years
  • Furnace: 15-25 years
  • Electric radiant heater: 40 years

If your heating system is broken, hire a contractor or a repair service to take a look at it. They can help you determine if it makes financial sense to replace your system or spend money on repairs. The good news is that replacing your old furnace will give you the opportunity to take advantage of newer, more efficient furnaces that can save you money on heating bills from the first cycle.

How does a hot water baseboard heating system work?

In a hot water baseboard heating system, a boiler heats water and then the water passes through the system’s pipes and into the baseboard radiators in your home. Baseboard heating systems are generally quiet, and you’ll experience less heat loss when compared to a forced-air system. However, you can’t use radiant basement heating for cooling purposes.

How does a central heating system work in a house?

A central heating system consists of a boiler, heat pump or furnace. The furnace contains several parts, including burners that deliver and burn fuel, a blower, heat exchangers, a blower and a flue. The furnace will push air through the heat exchanger. Then, it will pump the warmed air through your air ducts to distribute heat throughout your home.

In the summertime, a central heating system can also provide air conditioning to cool and dehumidify your home.

What is a dual fuel heating system?

Dual fuel systems combine two types of heat fuels — typically gas and electric, the latter in the form of a heat pump — to boost heating performance and efficiency. These systems work with your furnace to deliver both hot and cold air.  A major advantage lies in the power of a heat pump, which provides cool air in the summer and heat in the winter.

What is a radiant heating system?

A radiant heating system can be installed in your floors or wall panels. A radiant floor heating system warms your home from the ground, providing uniform heating throughout your home. These systems are quiet, and they don’t require ductwork.
