Tl;dr - surprised me with a $225 service charge for replacing a fuse when all I wanted was a free estimate on something else.
I contacted Rod to get an estimate to install a 240 V receptacle in my garage for an EV charger. He said that consultations were free and he couldn’t give me an estimate of the work over the phone. So he came to my house to to take a look at the panels and what configuration would work for installing a receptacle. I told him there was a subpanel in the garage that wasn’t getting any power and I assumed to install the receptacle that panel issue would need to get fixed. then I went to my office to work. I find him about half an hour later in the basement replacing an amp in the downstairs panel that fed to the garage subpanel.
He ended up giving me a quote for work that I thought would be excessive for the request, including completely reconstructing my main panel and feeding new wire to the garage cost of $4000. After he gave me a quote, he then told me for the service fee. It would be $225. I asked what that was for and he said it was for fixing the issue with the garage subpanel.
I told him I didn’t need the sub panel fixed. I didn’t realize that he would be charging me for replacing a single fuse, he never asked me if I wanted the fuse replaced nor told me that I would be charged, especially not that much for that just a replacement fuse. He said $225 is what his service fee is and he doesn’t charge until he actually does work. So he basically came over under the pretext of giving me a quote, did the smallest amount of work possible and then charged me $225. Absolutely ridiculous.
