Lea P. says, "This is the 4th house I have remodeled, and I have to say, Mat Nielsen is the best builder I have ever had the luck to find and work with. I plan to use him for a complete kitchen remodel in 2 years, as well as a bathroom remodel. This first project involved ripping out and replacing my enclosed back porch floor and the underlying beams, installing new, double exterior French doors and new flooring. This was all necessary because the previous sliding glass doors were improperly installed, and the lack of flashing and enough caulk around the door meant that there was seepage and the floor rotted out. On top of that, the porch was improperly installed without any ventilation, so the underlying beams were also rotting and required replacing. Mat's original estimate, very fair, did not include the beams, because there was no way to know before ripping out the floor. Mat's final price was exceptionally fair given the extra work. What I appreciate the most about Mat is that he is very careful and he did not just throw out numbers. He immediately diagnosed what was wrong, and pointed out other issues. He measured everything carefully and gave me a sound price, taking a couple of days to get back to me with a printed estimate that included cost of materials. I am disabled and getting around is difficult. Mat did all the shopping after I identified the doors and flooring I wanted online. In addition to the new back porch, Mat also constructed a ramp yo replace my side door steps, as well as steps leading down into my enclosed back porch. He was extremely helpful and easy to work with in constructing a ramp and steps that work with my disability. My life is easier and safer because of the good work he did for me. I feel very fortunate to have found him. Also, if Mat told me he would arrive at a specific time, he was there. Any changes, he texted me. And once the job started, tgere were no delays other than a day delayed for rain. Mat also left the site absolutely immaculate and gave my aging basset hound (almost) as much love as she wanted. Thanks, Mat! I look forward to our next project."See more

Frances H. says, "Parker was called out to my parents for an estimate on some basement windows and came in a timely manner, while giving a great priced quote compared to others. He showed up with everything in hand to get the job done and went about his work in a professional manner. The windows were in an older michigan basement and replaced with new glass vented windows. When he was complete with the job he made sure all materials and trash were taken care of and it was a clean and tidy space for my parents to return to for finishing the rest of the basement. He has his small dog he brings with him sometimes and while she has a loud personality she is the sweetest little sidekick he has. His two workers he had help were just as respectful and helpful as he was and I would and have recommended him to many friends that have needed work."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.
