Catherine H. says, "I hired Will's Carpenter LLC to add cabinets and two drawers to my built in bookshelf. He was available with a really quick turnaround, which was very convenient. He was very communicative and responsive to texts. The final product looks lovely, but I did have to have his guy come back to fix something that wasn't even. He did fix it. He also charged me extra at the end to install handles on the cabinets and drawers. In his defense, I hadn't specifically mentioned handles for the cabinets and drawers before, but since one of the cabinets was very difficult to open without a handle, it seems like something that could have been broached earlier in the process."See more

Aarzu M. says, "I initially hired Jose to remove the hand railing from my staircase which I urgently needed in order to move the following day. Since then, I have hired Jose to reinstall the same handrailing, run electrical to where my microwave should be, source and install a cabinet, install my microwave, install a new front door, and run new electrical + install a fan outdoors. Jose and his team are great because: - They are on time and work quickly. Jose knows the number of people he will need for each job and their specialties. Additionally, his team is kind and responsive. I asked his team to make sure they closed the basement door when they go down because I was worried about the cats, and I never had to ask them again - they insured that every single time they went down, the door was closed (same was true with the storm door). - They left my house better than they found it each day - they covered all furniture that might get stuff on it and made sure to vacuum, remove any tarps, etc when they left for the day. This is really important to me as I don't like to feel like I'm living in a construction zone even when his team is coming back the next day. - Jose is very good at talking you through options. When something unexpected comes up (and it will), he tells you about the problem and then walks you through your options. He is honest about solutions and costs. It's really invaluable to have someone that will tell you "you have a few options, x will be more expensive but you won't have to think about it again. y will be pretty cheap but it will be an issue for you in about 10 years" and then lets you make a thoughtful decision. Also, Jose has been good at telling me when he thinks a project isn't worth the cost to me and suggesting alternatives. - Perhaps a culmination of the above feedback and most important to me, they pay attention to the details. For example, today, they added additional screws to stabilize the beams for my porch fan and went through the additional effort to add drywall and paint over each and every screw to make sure it wasn't visible. When adding a new outlet, they made sure it was perfectly in line with the other ones on the opposing walls. His team understands that their work is functional AND aesthetic. I'm a bit hesitant to leave this review because I don't want Jose to get so busy that he can no longer do jobs for me. But, it'd be a disservice if I let his work go unrecommended."See more

Oko C. says, "My husband hired Top Master cabinets and granite for remodeling our entire basement and it went really well. I was so impressed especially with the punctuality, the quality of the work. When they said they’ll be here, they were here on time and when they said they’ll finish on time, they did. It was really nice to depend on them when it comes to managing our times around the renovation. For the renovation, they changed our carpet floor to laminate flooring. They wrapped everything to make sure they don’t get dusty and dirty and after the job, they’ve put everything back which was nice. They’ve added a whole new bathroom with shower which was something we needed to have and getting everything done at once was very convenient for us and saved a lot of money and time. They even suggested what mirror would look nice and what glass door would work better, etc. They really cared that we were happy with the outcome. After the whole renovation, they even helped us to put up our speakers on the wall since we wanted it high up. Again, this was a lot more help than they initially signed up for and we were so grateful to have the additional help. After the basement renovation, we hired them for another project in our garage, we needed some cabinets and countertops. Since it’s a garage I didn’t think the backsplash was needed but they insisted it was the right thing to do and it really was. They really are a great company with expertise and professionalism. It was just so wonderful working with them. And I will certainly hire their help on my next renovation project!"See more

Laura A. says, "German has been amazing to work with! He is very easy to work with, his work quality is exceptional, and he takes care of you. Easy to work with - Sometimes it can be difficult to find a contractor to work with who listens to you and really hears your concerns and questions without judgement. German is sometime who listens to you, no question is silly, and has always made me feel like my questions are valid and that he is perfectly happy talking to me (instead of my husband, for example). Work quality is exceptional - We have had German re-tile and fix our main bathroom, refinish an area under the stairs, and install a subfloor, paint, finish, and install kitchen cabinets. I never hesitate to call/text German and ask him if he can help with our various projects, and he is incredibly good. The work looks fantastic and I'm so happy with it. He takes care of you - In every project there are plot twists and unexpected challenges. Everytime one comes up, German fixes the issue the "good" way, doesn't cut corners at all, and takes the time to fix it for the long term solution. For example, in retiling the bathroom floor we discovered that under the tile was self-leveling concrete--upstairs! He could have left it there (it was a lot of labor and work to remove) but he took it out and made sure the subfloor was correctly prepped for tile. It was a lot of work that you can't see from the outside, but was crucial for the longevity of the bathroom and to access piping in the future. I highly, highly recommend German for whatever need you have in the house. I am so glad to have met him and to know that he is someone that I implicitly trust."See more

Scott B. says, "I ordered a custom loft bed from The TYMporium, and I can’t express how thrilled I am with the entire experience! From the initial design consultation to the final installation, Tan and the team went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. The craftsmanship is top-notch—the bed is incredibly sturdy and beautifully made, with so much attention to detail. Tan listened carefully to what I wanted and added creative elements I hadn’t even thought of, making the loft bed not only functional but a true centerpiece in the room. My child absolutely loves it, and it has completely transformed their space, giving them both a cozy place to sleep and extra room to play underneath. The communication was seamless throughout, and I appreciated how transparent and patient Tan was with any questions I had. The team delivered on time and the installation was flawless. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience! If you’re looking for custom furniture that is built with care, precision, and an incredible attention to detail, I highly recommend The TYMporium. They truly exceeded my expectations, and I will definitely be back for future projects! Thank you Tan!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.
