Jacari M. says, "It's been over a month since I received service from this amazing company. I called them after recognizing that I was having a problem with mice. In the first incident, I saw one shoot past my living room in the early morning and poop was starting to show up in many different spots. My husband and I initially called another company which came out to give us an estimate. He told us it would be much cheaper to take care of the issue ourselves. He gave us some tips and went on about his way. Well, after taking his advice, we found one in a trap and one dead in our garage (though, we are unsure of why because we had no poison). So we were feeling happy - thinking the problem was gone. Lo and behold, one runs past my foot in the kitchen during the day (bold!!). So after screaming my lungs out, I decided that we would just need to pay because clearly, we didn't get to the root of the problem. I contacted a few companies on Thumbtack and received general quotes and appointment dates. However, the other two companies I called seemed to have so many fees attached to their service. Brandon said he'd need to see it and then quote us. He was able to come the next day. He THOROUGHLY evaluated our home and crawlspace - finding two dead mice and evidence of live mice in our crawlspace and kitchen (behind the dishwasher). Afterward, he gave us a quote. It was doable. So we hired him. His workers came two days later and worked hard to finish the job. Happy with their service we paid and tipped. A few days later, one little mouse seemed to have made it into our home from somewhere, as it was seen running through our home during the early morning hours again. We called Brandon - he responded quickly and scheduled someone to come out at the soonest availability. We walked through the house together and at that time, I realized there was a closet that held our furnace that we forgot to look at during the initial inspection. Right away, the serviceman knew exactly where they were coming from. He serviced the area that day and I'm happy to say that, since then, we have not seen another rodent in our home. Thank you so much for giving me peace of mind and allowing me to feel comfortable in my home again. Needless to say, this is an amazing company."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I choose the best company to fix my HVAC system?

When your HVAC system isn’t working properly, you’ll need to hire a reputable company to repair it. Here are some of the qualifications to look for:

  • Licensure: Look for companies that employ technicians with the required licensing and certifications for your area. For example, find out if the technicians have HVAC licenses and NATE or EPA 608 certifications.

  • Insurance and warranties: Find out if the company backs its repair work on HVAC systems with a warranty for workmanship and parts. You should also hire a company that is bonded and insured.

  • Cost estimates: Obtaining several estimates helps ensure you’re not overpaying for HVAC services. Review the companies’ labor, materials and service call fees so you’re not surprised by any costs.

  • Reviews: Reach online reviews for each company you’re considering. Keep a lookout for similar complaints, especially if there’s a concern about the HVAC technicians’ quality of work.

  • Questions: Ask the company many questions before hiring them. For example, make sure they’re familiar with your HVAC system (split systems, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, etc.) and ask them how long the project will take.

What qualifications should I look for when hiring an HVAC professional?

HVAC systems involve many complex parts and require specialized expertise. Find out what the rules are for licensing and certifications in your area. Some states may require a technician or contractor to have an HVAC license or special certification. For example, find out if they have EPA 608 certification, NATE certification or the HVAC Excellence certification from ESCO Group

You should also look for the following when hiring a technician:

  • Fair pricing (get quotes from several pros)

  • Warranties for workmanship and parts

  • Mostly positive reviews

  • Insurance

  • Several years of experience

  • Familiarity with your type of HVAC system

How much do HVAC contractors charge for their services?

The national average cost to hire someone to maintain an air conditioning or heating system ranges from about $150 to over $800,* according to Thumbtack data.

For HVAC installation or replacement, Thumbtack data shows that prices tend to range from around $1,150 to $6,800.* However, you might spend more depending on various factors. For example, high-efficiency systems or complex ductwork may increase prices. Rates can also vary based on expertise, location and job urgency.

When contacting HVAC contractors, ask if their labor costs include travel time or diagnostic fees. Inquire about flat-rate pricing for specific services, which can sometimes save money compared to hourly billing. Also, confirm if overtime or emergency rates apply and request a detailed cost breakdown — including labor, parts and permits — to avoid hidden fees.

What services do HVAC contractors typically offer?

HVAC contractors may offer the following services to meet your heating, cooling and ventilation needs:

  • Installation: Setting up furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and ductwork for new or replacement systems

  • Maintenance: Conducting seasonal system checkups, thorough cleanings and inspections to boost performance, extend equipment lifespan and avoid unexpected failures

  • Repairs: Fixing issues such as malfunctioning thermostats, refrigerant leaks or damaged parts to restore optimal functionality

  • Indoor air quality solutions: Integrating air purifiers, humidifiers or dehumidifiers to combat allergens, regulate moisture levels and promote a healthier living environment

  • Emergency services: 24/7 support for urgent HVAC issues

What's the key difference between an HVAC technician and a contractor? And which one should I hire for my project?

While some companies and professionals might use these two terms interchangeably, there’s sometimes a difference:

An HVAC technician is a trained professional who typically handles repairs, maintenance and installations. They generally focus on specific, hands-on tasks like fixing systems or performing tune-ups.

An HVAC contractor, on the other hand, usually oversees larger projects, manages teams and ensures compliance with codes and permits. They can make repairs, but they might also send technicians to perform those repairs. They are licensed to manage entire projects, including design, installation and compliance with local regulations.

In some cases, a technician is sufficient for small repairs or maintenance. For major repairs and installations, system replacements or complex projects, you might want to hire an HVAC contractor first.

What are the benefits of hiring a local HVAC pro vs. trying to DIY your project?

Installing or repairing HVAC equipment yourself may sound like a shortcut around delays, but it could be the opposite. It’s easy to make mistakes, and fixing those mistakes can delay your project even more.

Before you DIY this project, consider the benefits of hiring a licensed HVAC professional:

  • Being licensed means they’ve completed the training and have acquired the skills to work on your HVAC system efficiently and properly.

  • Local technicians and contractors understand local code requirements and the permit process, which can be a big learning curve for the novice DIY-er.

  • HVAC pros can also assist with product registration to prevent voiding the warranty. Some manufacturers might even require this.

  • Installation or replacement might come with a discount or a period of free routine maintenance.

A DIY installation of indoor and outdoor components, ductwork, refrigeration lines and electrical connections places a huge burden on your time. Plus, any mistakes could cause significant system issues. Hire an HVAC technician or contractor to repair or install your new system safely, efficiently and, most importantly, correctly.
