Stephanie G. says, "We are beyond obsessed with the exterior paint and wood accent trim job with Golden State Builders. Everyone on the team was dialed, extremely thorough and dedicated (it was nearly 100 degrees outside the whole period of the project). I’m super grateful we found them and appreciate everyone’s hard work. Ben was fantastic throughout the process by keeping us updated, being available for any and all questions, and really facilitating our vision coming to life. Angel’s carpentry skills are absolutely stunning. Amit’s design renderings really helped make us feel assured of the choices we played around with. And Martin and the rest of the prep and paint crew were no other word but exceptional. We will 1000% be using them for any and all home jobs in the future because their skills and service are unmatched. Thank you so much to everyone on the team! 🙏🏼"See more

Jack D. says, "I recently had OT Bay Builders come out to repair the wood and stucco on my home, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the results. From the initial consultation to the completion of the project, the team was professional, knowledgeable, and efficient. The wood on my exterior was rotting in several places, and the stucco had multiple cracks and damage from years of wear and tear. The OT Bay Builders team carefully assessed the damage and provided a clear, detailed plan for the repairs. They used high-quality materials and paid great attention to detail, ensuring that every piece of wood was securely replaced and the stucco was seamlessly repaired. What impressed me most was their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. They kept me informed throughout the process, answered all my questions, and ensured the work area was clean and tidy each day. The final result is outstanding – my home looks better than ever, and I have peace of mind knowing that the repairs were done right."See more

Michelle R. says, "RAVE!!!❤️❤️❤️ My deck was rotting underneath the composite… Continually and steadily for several years. I finally found a reputable company to do the job. I’ve looked for no less than three years for someone to fix my deck. Did not find anyone… Could not find anyone who could do the job or even come over to give me a quote. Sorry, but there is a lot of flakiness in the SLV. So I had to go to San Jose to find this guy… I looked on Thumbtack. he had some good reviews and he is a great communicator… We communicated for two weeks, and he even looked at the deck when I was not home… And we did not even meet until the day he started work! Usually that is weird, but he was such an excellent communicator that I was in constant contact with him on the phone and through text… We share pictures back and forth of the deck. I told him I needed to do it in the most cost-effective way… it was either go on a little vacation at the end of this year, or spend whatever vacation money I had to fix this deck. Sadly, I will not be going on vacation, but this was money well spent, and I can enjoy my home again! I wanted him to stay within budget and I didn’t have a huge one… And I told him I wanted to save as much of the deck and reuse it as much as possible… He was able to reuse absolutely all of the composite that was the top layer on the deck. Underneath it was rotting. He didn’t pressure me to buy all new materials… He even let me get the materials myself and have them delivered from Home Depot… So no markup on the materials. The only cost was labor. Anyways, here are the before, during, and after photos and his business card. I highly recommend him if you cannot find anyone in the valley."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Does adding a porch increase home value?

A porch may increase your home’s value and boost its curb appeal. However, you’ll need to do your research to understand what types of home upgrades can attract potential buyers.

How much is a porch?

It costs about $5,000-$10,000 to build a small, basic porch, according to HGTV. Prefabricated porches typically cost around $10,000-$30,000. Larger, custom-made porches can cost as much as $50,000.

To find out exactly how much your porch will cost, request a cost estimate from a porch builder near you.

What is a sleeping porch?

A sleeping porch is a screened balcony or deck that contains sleep furnishings and cool breezes. If you live in a region that experiences warm weather at night, these porches can provide a way to escape the heat and get a good night’s sleep.

Does a porch need foundations?

Yes, your porch should have a foundation that adheres to your local building codes. You can often find this information online. You can also consult your porch builder and ask for their help when navigating building codes.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

How do I find a contractor to build a deck?

First, conduct an online search so you can see a list of the best deck contractors in your area. This makes it easy to compare the top-rated pros, and you can quickly view their ratings.

Next, click on several contractors’ profiles so you can read their customer reviews and view photos of decks the pros have completed. When reading the reviews, look for information that highlights the contractors’ quality of work, their ability to build the deck on time and their pricing methods. As you’re looking at the before-and-after photos of completed decks, pay attention to the craftsmanship, materials and style so you can get a sense of the contractors’ skills and experience.

After identifying several deck contractors who seem capable of building your deck, look into their credentials. Confirm the requirements in your state and city, and try to verify the pros’ licenses online. Or, you can ask the contractors to provide you with an overview of their credentials.

Your last step: start asking for free estimates from several contractors. Give them as many details about your project as possible so the pros can give you an accurate estimate. What type of material do you want for your deck? How big will it be? Where should it be built — your front yard or backyard? When do you need it built?

Make your final decision after comparing quotes and analyzing the research you’ve conducted. Ultimately, you should pick a contractor who has experience building your desired deck, the necessary qualifications, mostly positive reviews and fair pricing.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
