One of the running themes at our studio is how architecture affects the individual and the community and vice-versa. From our point of view as designers, this interaction happens both ways, constantly.
Who we are and what we think determines what we build. If we have respect, our buildings will be respectful to the land. If we care about others, our structures will be considerate toward our neighbors. If we spend time thinking about the future, our systems will contemplate sustainability, energy conservation, and social responsability.
But a less obvious preoccupation is how our design and our design intent will affect users and inhabitants of architecture, all of us, potentially. For starters, let’s reach for the moon; can we actually make people happier?
If we manage to design a space that is practical and beautiful at the same time, will it help you be more efficient or more appreciative? If we plan for the interior and exterior of your house to blend with each other so you can feel more a part of nature–upon waking you see birds and squirrels from your bed–will it make you feel kinder to your children? Will it make you smile? If we fill your house with color–red, orange, yellow warming your heart as you walk towards the kitchen to make your morning coffee–will it lift your spirit and help you have a better day at work? If an inviting ipe bench is waiting for you as you come home after work, to sit on as you take your shoes off while you look at the neighbor’s cat drinking from the front fountain among the lilies and the horsetail, will you feel more safe and ready to relax and rest?
