James Delabarto says, "This review may be lengthy but hopefully worth reading if you are considering this company for electrical work!We recently had an electrical meter box on one of the 50+ homes in our tract explode and cause a fire due to a short caused by an improperly installed electrical service line to that house. Apparently the incoming line lacked the in ground "expansion loop" that is required at time of service installation when the home is being built. Dr Electric provided the damaged home with a new service line (including the loop) as well as a new meter box and associated require accessories. They also noted the problem in a few other homes and as a service to the 50+ homeowners they provided each with a letter explaining that many additional homes in our neighborhood may also have the issue. As part of the letter, they offered a free inspection of each meter box, along with an assessment of each home'sstatusand options to correct the problem. We decided to have them do such an assessment of our service line. We were given a very detailed / thorough explanation of our situation by Joe and Matt (owner) and decided to proceed with them and signed a contract proposal. On the day of the dig, even Matt the owner attended supervised and participated in the dig and the assessment / rectification of our incoming lineproblem. The dig reveled that we in fact did have the loop but was positionally installed improperly. He and crew rectified that condition and installed a new meter base, meter box, and expansion style incoming pipe. He also checked our grounding situation per code and found it met code. Initially thought we needed additional grounding, and reduced the price for that feature as well asfor the ground loop which he did not have to splice. Obviously a very honest contractor. He even waited around for 2 hours after the completion of the job waiting for RG&E to show to turn on the power again (RG&E misplaced the order to start service again). They not only do quality work but obviously have integrity and honestyincorporated into their approach to business!Very satisfied with Matt and DR Electic! Thank you guys!"See more

Jon B. says, "Cristian Ibarra of Liverpool, NY went to the extra effort of driving to Endicott, NY to personally review a proposed job. He could not qualify the scope of the job from the dozen images that I had provided with listed job post via the Thumbtack app. He offers coverage beyond Onondaga County and is willing to assist you with your electrical projects. Upon his arrival, I learned that he drove more than 60 miles to the job site. I had asked him to tell me what part of the county (Broome) that he was driving from - as I specifically desired someone local. His verbal quote was appropriate in that it covered time and materials not usually factored in with old buildings and existing code violations that he was able to spot and explain. I let him know that straight away that his daily commute to this job was unfortunately disqualifying, in my humble opinion. Had he listed his home base address as Liverpool, I would not have invited him to review the job in order to quote. His Thumbtack web portal's credentials does highlight his real name as Cristian Ibarra, but not his address. His cell is from area code (407) = Orlando, Florida He knew what the job entailed in that I provided more than 12 images of the proposed work (replacing a 100A electrical service panel, and then reviewing very old wiring and lack of compliant junction boxes in the apartment's numerous rooms' ceiling fixtures to install LED lamps). Cristian has submitted his quote to Nick Cataldo and is frustrated that Nick has not replied to his offer to do the multi-day job. I created the ThumbTack posting for Nick Cataldo and I will follow through to request that he consider paying the $85 service call fee. That is up to Nick to decide. I made it abundantly clear that Cristian's repeated failure to provide me with his contact (digital image) business card, name, address, web site, QR code, or his cell number so that I could talk to him were all disqualifying reasons to NOT consider him for the job. I told him that two other electricians had also been disqualified for not having been local electricians. Those candidates were from less than an hour away, but still considered NOT local enough to spend two hours per day commuting back and forth. Cristian does have the can do attitude and electrician certification to tackle this project, but I am focused on finding someone local for logistic reasons."See more

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.
