Introduction
I'm driven by a passion for the art and beauty of photography. I started taking pictures as a hobby, not as a profession. It was something I simply did for enjoyment and creativity. I believe that has translated into pictures that are more authentic, that capture stillness, quietness, and the essence of the subject. I focus on the details, the split-second action, or reaction, that makes or breaks a photo, while keeping in mind the greater vision of what I want to capture. I enjoy photography because I love capturing the fleeting moments in life. It's a challenge to encapsulate specific feelings, emotions, and nuances within a confined, two-dimensional space, but one that is worth trying whenever the occasion arises. I love photography because it is a way of conveying how I feel, in a deeper sense, about something, some place, or someone.

It was a pleasure to have Garland take our engagement photos! We had some ideas of what photos we wanted, but Garland came prepared with his own list of ideas for location, poses, etc. This ended up being awesome because even though we had ideas, it was great to have the photographer guide you and not have to worry about where to go next or what to do. He also caught many candid shots that we ended up loving! Garland also helped us feel comfortable in front of the camera which helped us feel and look more natural. The edits turned out great! Our family and friends loved our photos and many mentioned that the photos were so "us." As mentioned earlier, Garland was great about guiding us, but also was great at capturing our dynamic as a couple and our personalities. I would highly recommend Garland!

Garland was a spectacular photographer who captured the new addition to our family beautifully. Our family photo-shoot in Gantry Park in LIC was gorgeous, the willow trees and NYC backdrop was amazing in the morning. He gave us examples of family portrait shots ahead of time which allowed us to be at ease with a newborn (it is not easy taking pictures of a newborn who is sleepy, hungry or fussy at times). We received our shots digitally, all high quality and in a matter of a few days we were able to print and frame them on our walls. Overall, Garland did an amazing job, great quality shots, was flexible and worked on our timing (a newborn is no joke) and very professional with the preparation and communication.

Garland was professional, creative, accommodating, and fun to work with. He was a pleasure to work with on our NYC engagement photo shoot in Riverside Park. (Where Colin had popped the question a few months prior!) In the weeks beforehand, he asked about what our heart’s desire was for the final product, and was very responsive to our vision which we communicated through phrases and a Pinterest board. Originally planned as a “sunrise shoot” hoping to catch the unique bright light of dawn, the shoot was clouded by a forecast of rain which threatened to obscure our desired lighting by fog and storm. Garland was very accommodating, and obliged to our request made just the night before, to meet later in the day. (As it turns out, the sun came out at this time for perfect lighting!) The shoot was scheduled for 2 hours with some spots picked out beforehand. Colin and I were relatively new to being in front of the lens, but Garland was very encouraging, and his calm, chill, and down-to-earth vibe helped us to be natural with each other (e.g., our silly selves). We hit up our chosen spots: atop secluded stone steps, under sun-kissed trees, on sidewalks with taxis in the background. Time was up, but we noticed some other cool shots nearby: a large, structured, mechanical bridge, a pier overlooking the river, a small “field” of wheat. Knowing that although Garland is an engagement photographer, his first type of photography was landscape photography, we collectively couldn’t help but extend our time together to include some more captures. We even got some spontaneous shots doing yoga poses in the middle of the street underneath the vast, steel bridge. It was so much fun to create together. Garland gave us a few photos before the final product to see if we liked where his editing was going, and then got us the final product within weeks. It is a delight to have this special time of our lives immortalized in photography. Our tips for any couple setting up an engagement shoot: - pick out your spots beforehand within a manageable walking distance of each other but don’t be afraid to deviate from the plan if creativity strikes - pay attention to every detail from hair, outfit, makeup, and get tips from the internet or your photographer beforehand on which colors and patterns complement each other and work with your scenes - communicate clearly with your photographer which kind of shots you would really like or not like (e.g., are you not a fan of kissing photos; do you want a classic, serious, or whimsical mood). - find a photographer who takes the time to get to know you as a couple and you feel comfortable with! (like we were with Garland!) - Have fun!

Garland is an excellent photographer and really fun to work with. We had our engagement photos taken months before but they didn't turn out the way we wanted or expected. In large part this is because our prior photographer included this session for free as a wedding package so they didn't put much thought into it or ask us how we wanted it to look. Garland spends a ton of time with his clients to plan the session and to understand what you want the photos to look like. This "pre-planning" seems like something all photographers would do - but from my experiences so far during my engagement and wedding planning it is not the norm. Expect Garland to spend time with you before the shoot to plan your day, and stick to schedule the day of your shoot. After the shoot he goes above and beyond to select the very best photos. On a previously experience with another photographer we were just given hundreds of photos even though some of them were not good -- like we would never post them to social media. There are two trains of thought on this: you probably want some blooper photos to laugh at, but if there are too many, then you're spending a lot of time sifting through photos you wouldn't necessarily show to family or post to social media. Garland takes a TON of photos, but then only picks the very best ones to include as part of your set. He is very, very professional. My fiancé and I were very pleased and impressed. Thanks Garland!!

Garland Quek is an incredibly talented photographer. He has a keen talent and sense for capturing poignant moments which was evident throughout our infant photo shoot. In addition, he was able to make the subjects, my husband, son, and I, feel at ease, which can be challenging with a 2-month old baby! He provided overall direction all while allowing us to naturally let the day unfold which was essential considering we had to incorporate intermittent feeds and diaper changes. We had a lot of fun being ourselves and had faith that his work would help tell the narrative of our family. We are thrilled with the results and found several photographs that we will treasure for a lifetime!
