Charles C. says, "Vito from Mint Construction was nothing but EXCELLENT as per a caulking job of kitchen counter top, Silstone, and the backsplash of 2 inch marble tiles. I am a "Just So" person: So when it comes to home repairs it must be done PERFECTLY. Upon completion of this job Vito deserves a definite 5 STAR Rating. He was friendly, personable, exactly on time, and Very Professional when recaulking the grout that cracked and separated from the surfaces of the Silstone and Backsplash. In the future any caulking work or in fact any tile work I shall contact Vito from Mint Construction. Additionally, his price was very fair. To Vito Thank You for a job well done, BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO !"See more

Tom J. says, "We recently hired Mike and Dennis MJDP Flooring for a bathroom remodel, and we couldn't be happier with the results! From start to finish, their communication was exceptional—they kept us informed every step of the way and made sure all my questions and concerned were answered. Their attention to detail was outstanding, ensuring that every tile and fixture was to our standards giving us their professional opinion. On top of that, they were incredibly mindful of our budget, providing high-quality options without unnecessary costs. We didn’t expect to remodel so quickly due to a leak- but they was able to get the work done and we are so thankful. We already hired them for another room. If you're looking for a team that’s professional, skilled, and easy to work with, I highly recommend Mike and Dennis"See more

Ragini Parekh says, "This is the third time I am using GMATT builders for renovation, and this is the largest and most extensive renovation I have done to date. I am extremely happy with the work that I have received on all three of my renovations with GMATT builders. The first renovation that I had with GMAT builder was at my previous house, it was a roof replacement. The second renovation that I had with him was the installation of a very large picture window at my first house. Both jobs were done within the time frame that Mr Gomez had advised, and they were done very well. For my most recent renovation, which was the extension of the back of the house, with an addition of approximately 350 ft, plus a new kitchen, plus a new laundry room, shower, and a new pressure treated deck that is approximately 360 ft. After getting bids from multiple contractors, I once again contacted Mr Gomez for a bid. His bid was competitive with the range that had been proposed to me, and having worked with him over a time frame of 20 years gave me the confidence to go ahead with him on this job, the largest job to date. His work is excellent. The building of a crawl space, new exterior walls, roof, finished walls and floor, installation of porcelain tile floors, installation of the shower, installation of a skylight as well as several windows and two doors, the installation of my cabinetry, including the crown molding on the cabinetry, installation of the lighting, and last but not least of all the installation of a 4,000 lb steel beam to hold up the entire second floor of my house have all been done very nicely. Mr Gomez is on the site almost every single day, And he does much of the work himself, along with his employees. I find that he brings the same employees time and again, so I feel confident in knowing that he has trained and supervised them well, and is not the type of contractor who has a part-time crew working for him intermittently, which is one of those things that we are told to watch out for. I felt very confident leaving him at the home to do the work while I went to work myself, knowing that the work would be done properly.Mr Gomez is receptive to my inquiries, and answers all of my questions very patiently. He addressed all of my concerns. I have been very happy with the overall work. I did have some issues with my heat, some heat loss, some issues with the tile work and the trim work that were noticed after the completion of the job, and he has been very attentive to taking care of all of those needs. If ever I need to have another small or a large renovation done, I would not hesitate to contact Mr Gomez again. I have been using him for several smaller jobs over the last 20 years as well, not including these three larger jobs, and have always had a positive experience with him.Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Please take a look at my finished kitchen.Thank you Javier! You rock!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

Consult with a top tile contractor near you and get free estimates on how much installing tile will cost you.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
