** John has reached out to amend some of the issues and I will update here when complete. John and his team built 2 decks, installed a door and were supposed to install a range hood. None of these 4 jobs were performed without something being incomplete, and we were willing to let the small imperfections pass (wrong size door trim, door not sealed, a few pieces of damaged wood used on the deck, steps not level). I wasn't bothered so much about imperfections, but more so concerned with structural and safety issues we noticed. Although John and his team were nice, the work they did was shoddy. The range hood was a complete loss of money for us. They used flexible ducting in the attic (fire hazard). We asked them to use an elbow to route the duct to the roof vent and they just mashed the duct to bend it, the duct was not properly sealed in the housing unit over the range area and was leaking into the unit, as well as in the attic where the duct connection was not taped at all. Big fire hazard when cooking over an open burner with 25K BTUs. Instead of regrouping to find a solution, they tried to pass off unsafe work as complete. Before they left we even asked if they could help us get the casing of the hood off. It was not even installed to the minimum height requirement- we asked for the maximum. They left in a hurry to another job and said we'd have to talk to John, the owner. We were able to get the casing off and we saw why they left in a hurry. One of the screws was stripped, which is why the casing was not fitting properly. At this point I did not want this employee back in our home since he left us with a mess and a fire hazard. As for the decks, the back deck looks very nice although the step framing is sitting on the ground and the screw they used to attach the stairs to the deck has split the wood. On the side deck they just plopped the steps on the sloped concrete patio and didn't bother to level them. The new deck has a bigger footprint, so I was looking around for where they would have attached the new 4x posts for the railing, and was floored when I didn't see any. The only 4x posts were at the bottom of the steps. None attached to the deck railing or top of the steps. They braced the rail against my downspout, and the only thing holding the railing up is the balusters. And yes, the guardrail and handrails are both loose. One rail is attached to the vinyl siding only - no wood. Very loose. This is done so sloppily that I could tear it down with one hand. At this point I got their work professionally inspected as it was clear this deck will have to be secured and we are considering our options. The inspector said that the framing members of this deck were poorly connected and supported. They used nails to attach the deck to both sides that abut the house and not even lag bolts where the weight of the deck is being supported. This whole deck will have to be reworked in order to make it safe and structurally sound. I do not recommend hiring him. I emailed some of these concerns to John and he never responded.

Details: New deck or porch construction • No existing plans, but have a good idea of what I want • Residential

Details: Large items to haul • Furniture, appliances or electronics • Enough to fill half of a pickup truck • There are no flights of stairs

Good Wood's reply
I do apologize for having the nerve to give you a price you asked for, we probably should have done it it for free because our time really is worth nothing. 2 guys, a truck, ins, overhead to come 45 mins away what was i thinking? almost like I have a business or something. Also thanks for the review though we did no work for you.
