6 years ago I got an emergency call from home saying my dad was in the hospital. When I flew back home I learned my dad had lung cancer and we were talking him home for hospice. My dad never smoked and was an avid hunter into his 70’s. When I got home I asked my mother what this stack was coming out of the house. She said it was for Radon remediation because they had high tests which they never told me about. As I drove up and down the road they lived on I saw more and more remediation stacks. Because of high Radon readings in the home. Doctors surmised that my dad probably got lung cancer because of Radon.
Something that is entirely preventable if a proper remediation system is installed to trap the gas and remove it from the home. Working as an Environmental Geologist for the largest laboratory in New York state for eight years. I immediately called some old environmental friends to check out the system in the crawl space. What we found was appalling sheets of plastic strewn around with really no barrier to trap the gas and nothing sealed in crawl space to prevent gas from coming into the house. Two days later after fixing the system I was plugging my dads oxygen machine in and the outlet crumbled in my hand. It was at that moment I realized how bad my dad’s health had deteriorated and he was not able to keep up with things. I had to make this house safe for my Mom because she was never going to move.
I spent the next week rewiring the house to make the electrical system, installing a better water filtration system, fire alarm and Carbon dioxide system and looked over the whole house to make sure the house was safer for mom. It was after this experience that I asked myself how I could prevent this from happening to other people.
