Kayla E. says, "Honest review; good work for handymen but not perfect. I will still give 5 stars but would like to leave details for future customers. Cost was $150 an hour and they were upfront about that so I expected almost perfect or pretty solid work. I glanced too quickly before they left so that is an error on my end. Once I prepped the boards this morning (caulk, sand, wood filling, nailing, etc) that is when I noticed a few mistakes. Corners were mitered and not coped. Most boards were not flush with the floor. Floor gaps happen, but there were a lot. There were a few gaps on top that I had to nail in myself that were missed. Overall, for $150, I expected a bit more but that's ok. The guys were great people. Very friendly. Other small things to note: The son knew I was pregnant but when I came home I noticed he was smoking outside while cutting boards. Some people are fine with that! It just bothered me a bit as smoke will carry into the home on clothing, materials, etc but I'm not gonna take stars off for that. Just be a bit cautious next time. They also seemed to have gotten the wrong board size if I remember correctly. So they had to go back to the store and get new ones. That took about an hour (I timed it on my phone), which I was charged for even though that was an error on their end. Be aware that ALL time is charged regardless of whether or not you (customer) are at fault for any errors or last minute things. $150 for that hour is a lot. Overall cost was $1700 for 8 hours (originally quoted $1300 but they went over the time they estimated). This includes just cuts and nailing. They do painting, caulking, etc but I declined as they were already over the estimated quote and I did not want to be charged more. They did go out of their way to clean up some left over trash of mine outside (took about 10ish minutes and they offered) and I do appreciate the kindness. Not many companies do that. I would recommend them if they stay in the time that they mention in their quote. If they go over it can get pricey so just be aware moving forward. Thank you guys"See more

Scott N. says, "I cannot say enough good things about Abstrakt Construction and would HIGHLY recommend them for any of your home remodel needs! I recently purchased a house that was built in 1918 and needed a lot of help rehabbing it. When I reached out for a quote, Brian was responsive, came to my house quickly, and provided a fair price. Once I agreed to move forward, his crew started just a few days later on the job. Given the age of the house, it was a challenging project but the construction crew never complained and worked every day until the job was completed during the heat of the summer. The job included demo’ing the walls and ceiling (lath and plaster) in three rooms, fixing/replacing ceiling joists, putting up new drywall on the walls/ceiling, mudding/taping/sanding for painting. They were also great with all plumbing and electrical needs. In addition to those three rooms, they installed new countertops, a kitchen sink, two showers, bath vanity, hot water heater, sump pump, and fixed multiple leaking valves and spickets. Along the way several unexpected surprises came up including the broken ceiling joists and several leaks. Brian was very kind and offered a great deal to fix those as additional parts of the job. Finally, after rebuilding the walls/ceilings in those three rooms, his crew came in with commercial vacuums to get out all the fine dust that settled into the carpets. I feel Abstrakt Construction went above and beyond and did a phenomenal job. I will not hesitate to use them for all my future construction and home remodeling jobs. If you need help remodeling your home, be sure to give them a call!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.
