Yakov S. says, "I had a great experience with Tiago and highly recommend him and his company. I wanted to change my front porch, rear deck, and side deck (360 sq. ft. in total) from wood to composite. Tiago gave me a very reasonable quote of $10K and 5 days of work by 2 people. Last year I had a Trex Platinum Pro contractor quote me $47K and four weeks to redo the same three decks from scratch (new frame and railing, trim and decking). On the other side of the range, before Tiago I worked with another contractor that offered to change just the decking, not the trim, for $6K in one day of work by three people. It quickly became apparent that the cheaper contractor did not know what they were doing - they did not know how to picture frame a deck, they were using a nail gun instead of screws, the boards were all wobbly and uneven - so we had to let them go before they did any more damage. Tiago offered to properly do the work that the other contractor mishandled. When he took off the old decking, he saw that some of the joists in the frame had rotted, and the railing posts were not attached correctly to the frame. But he was able to save us money by cutting out and replacing the rotten sections, and putting new railing posts in place, instead of having to redo the whole frame. The whole job ended up costing us $12.5K for six days of work. My wife and I are really happy with our new decks. I especially appreciate Tiago covering the joists in the frame with Zip System tape, the same kind that's used for house siding, to prevent further water damage. And I really liked how Tiago brought me receipts for everything he had to get from Home Depot, so that I could see for myself that he is not inflating the cost of materials. I think Great Choice Home Improvements are in that sweet spot where they know what they are doing, but they are not yet super overpriced. I would definitely use them again."See more

John P. says, "The incredibly bad unclean condition of my apartment, especially the 20 years of cigarette smoke accumulated on all of the walls and on all of the windows along with equally horrible grime buildup in all of those sliding-window tracks and almost all of the above with furniture preventing access, and additionally the tub/shower enclosure with lime and grime and soap buildup that was simply beyond my ability to tackle, had finally gotten to the point that despite their years of patience with me the Housing Authority refused to pass me on my recent annual inspection and sent me a Get-It-Done-Or-Else sort of letter with an upcoming re-inspection date. When all of the Housekeeping Services, the Cleaning Services, and even all of the so-called Deep Cleaning Services that I called had astonished, fearful, daunted, dazed faces upon seeing what would be involved in accepting my job they either simply and honestly said "We're not up for this big a job" or "We'll call you back with a price" and then never called or texted back (one even blocked my number so they wouldn't have to talk to me after initially telling they would take the job - I swear to God!) I finally posted an honest description of the difficult work I needed done on Thumbtack, and Angel's Touch Construction was one of the first two contractors to respond expressing interest in taking on the job. So, after reading their excellent reviews and researching them even more deeply and finding that they are more than a Construction Company and that they do all kinds of large, medium, and small projects along with painting jobs, cleaning jobs, and a variety of other kinds of work, I responded to Rodyn's initial message. Rodyn then got back to me again very promptly and came to my apartment with Dora the next morning to see the job and to give me a price. I accepted their quote and we decided to proceed with the work the very next morning. Dora and two more of the Angel's Touch Construction crew members arrived promptly the next morning and got right to work, working earnestly and purposefully. There were a number of things, both surfaces and objects, that on the previous morning I had told Rodyn and Dora not to bother with and to just ignore during the job, but it seemed as though Dora and the two crew members who with her were quite determined to leave my home in as near to the clean condition that I found it on the day I moved in 20 years ago, and then they did just that. They definitely did more than I had asked and that I had explained that I wanted and needed done. Thank you, Rodyn. Thank you, Dora. And, thanks, too, to the two of you that accompanied Dora in accomplishing my job."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Does adding a porch increase home value?

A porch may increase your home’s value and boost its curb appeal. However, you’ll need to do your research to understand what types of home upgrades can attract potential buyers.

Does a porch need foundations?

Yes, your porch should have a foundation that adheres to your local building codes. You can often find this information online. You can also consult your porch builder and ask for their help when navigating building codes.

What is a sleeping porch?

A sleeping porch is a screened balcony or deck that contains sleep furnishings and cool breezes. If you live in a region that experiences warm weather at night, these porches can provide a way to escape the heat and get a good night’s sleep.

How much is a porch?

It costs about $5,000-$10,000 to build a small, basic porch, according to HGTV. Prefabricated porches typically cost around $10,000-$30,000. Larger, custom-made porches can cost as much as $50,000.

To find out exactly how much your porch will cost, request a cost estimate from a porch builder near you.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

When in doubt, contact the best deck contractors near you and start getting free estimates today.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).
