The gentleman I spoke with needs better communication skills. I was clear in communicating I only needed help with the layout of my book; I didn't need illustrations. He said he'd be able to do it. As we talked further, he asked me how much money I paid the artist to do my illustrations, which I thought was inappropriate. I told him the approximate amount despite feeling uncomfortable. Soon after, he asked me how much I think he should get paid to do the layout. Why would he ask me that when I'm the customer? He should know what he charges for his work. I told him that he needs to give me a quote. He said he would think about it, then give me a call back. He never did call me back. It's upsetting because I believe he didn't want to do it because he wanted to make more money by adding and/or revising my illustrations, but I was transparent with my needs from the start. Either he did not listen well or he thought I would change what I wanted. Nevertheless, when I confronted him about not following up with me, he became defensive and started talking about how I don't know his situation. His wife is pregnant, blah, blah, blah. That was just an excuse. He is on Thumbtack's platform trying to make money off people; it's his responsibililty to maintain professionalism and not burn bridges with people. Oh, and he had the audacity to tell me that I had reached out to 8 other illustrators so I can let them do my work. He didn't care. Also, I don't believe he understood that his behavior was unprofessional.
