Introduction

I listen to the music that the students wants to play and show them dozens of alternative ways of transferring that love to the chosen instrument. You should know that I'm always in a wonderful mood when I teach (I mean wonderful) except when the student doesn't work at all. I actually have four careers in music: I teach, I write, I play, and I tune pianos. Gratitude oozes forth from me daily for this good fortune, and I love most everything I do, including planning, eating, sleeping, riding my bike, and the students I see are real treasures. They know it, their parents know it, I know it. We don't talk about this, but there are many ways of knowing, as well as many ways of learning, and especially there are as many ways of playing as there are people on earth and Mars.

Jon did an excellent job tuning our new but very old piano. He took the time to do it right and didn’t leave until it was done. He is a very nice man who knows music and pianos well.

Our daughter (Kivi) started with the recorder in 4th grade, and soon graduated to clarinet. By Middle School, she was taking lessons from a classical teacher who advanced her skills markedly. Upon reaching high school, she was in demand by the jazz band - whose leader persuaded her to take up the saxophone. Kivi loved the sax, and loved jazz, but clarinet remained her first instrument. I thought of the great jazz clarinet players: Pete Fountain at the top of a substantial list. But we could find no one who could teach jazz clarinet. Finally, we attended an event at VanderCook, and one of the presenters gave us Jon's name. Kivi studied with Jon for about two years. I was disappointed with the amount of time Kivi had to spend practicing Jon's lessons - what high schooler has time for anything? Nevertheless, Kivi learned a great deal from Jon, and was the only student to ever perform a clarinet solo in our high school's jazz band history ("Jack the Bear"). Jon was unique in my experience in that he taught what Kivi wanted to learn - rather than imposing a rigid course of instruction. If you are considering private lessons that offer something both valuable and unique, please look no further than Jon Novi.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Every student is different. Every one gets a different teaching method. I've had thousands of students. Neither I nor my students are typical.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a university degree that says I teach music, and another that says I'm a master of music, in performance. Before the eight years of college, I took eight years of piano lessons. Since college I have had 5-7 more private teachers, depending on how you count them. No one ever asks to see my parchments because I am an experienced teacher. This is immediately evident, and there is no substitute for experience.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
God and my parents showed me the beauty of music at an early age, and I never lost the sound.
