CAROL M. says, "My laundry room/boiler room was the only room in my house that hadn’t been finished and I finally decided I wanted it done. After interviewing several companies, I decided on Hammer Heros. Sam came out and showed me just how putting up the drywall would work since I had a room full of pipes. He made several suggestions and showed me cabinets I could use. I had a concrete floor and they put in a solid core vinyl, gave me lots of light, a barn door, and a new laundry sink. There was a team of workers for every phase of the construction and they were very respectful and prompt. Aaron, the owner, was here often and made sure things were going as they should. If something wasn’t quite right it was fixed immediately. They were able to start almost immediately and told me it would take about 2 weeks. It took just over 2 weeks and I couldn’t be happier. I love my new laundry room and would absolutely recommend Hammer Hero. They did a quality job for me and I know they will for you, too."See more

Scott J says, "We can sum up our review of A2Z Builders with one sentence: If you are not using A2Z Builders for your remodel/build you might be making a big mistake. Our project consisted of:Kitchen remodel and appliancesTwo (2) bathrooms remodeled with vanities, fixtures, flooring and paintHardwood flooring installed in lower level of house, 4 rooms and stairway to landing and upper levels, including baseboard installationFireplace modification and cabinet installation in family roomPainting/Drywall repair in lower level of houseRemoval and finish of pony walls living roomOur experience with A2Z Builders:What stood out most was the absence of the typical Us versus Them dynamic often encountered with contractors. It was a collaborative atmosphere where our Project Manager, Tom shared and understood our vision for the project. Our kitchen designer Michelle also understood our vision and facilitated the kitchen remodel.Communication with Tom was excellent. We knew each week what was to take place and when. They showed up. Work was always done as planned and on time.A few unexpected issues arose, but Toms solution was always the best solution in resolving the issues. Tom was always concerned with details. After 30-50 % of the project was complete we had developed a trust with Tom and A2Z Builders. At that point we did not have to question what we were told.At no point did we feel A2Z was cutting corners to expedite the project or cut costs. We utilized several of their partners and were pleased with the materials and costs.A2Z Builders exceeded our expectations. Their commitment to client satisfaction set a standard that few contractors can match. Based upon our experience, we would recommend without hesitation A2Z Builders for your home remodel/build.Scott/Kathi J."See more

Mark L. says, "John is a machine. He installed all the flooring and brand new baseboard for my 1100 ft² condo downtown in less than 2 days. 21st came to evaluate my unit that I had recently purchased, immediately saw that there was two layers of flooring and accurately assess all the issues that would have to be addressed because of it. John showed up early each morning raring to go. He didn't stop to eat all day. He just kept on going until the alarm working hours in my building were up. When he was done, all he wanted to do was offer help with more tasks in my remodel. He proceeded to help me far beyond his original scope with a smile on his face. John was focused on quality, customer service, and value for me the entire time. He has a lot of knowledge for beyond installing flooring. His experience with demolition gives him great insight as to how things fit together and how things are put together. He instinctively near what was going on behind the walls. I had a criminal contractor do a bunch of illegal wiring and shoddy Plumbing in my home. John was able to accurately predict what was going on with things that were out of sight. When we eventually opened up the walls to fix what was wrong, John was right about everything. He gave me value far beyond the money that I paid him. I am very grateful Two thumbtack for introducing me to him. I own several rental properties and Will surely am divine more in the future. John will be my first call each time when I do. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.
