We worked with Mason and team for plans to a) remove a load bearing wall with solutioning b) create two additional windows on the exterior walls which are also load bearing. The initial meeting with Mason went well and although this was very expensive (~ $6000 with support for permits) , we signed the contract and proceeded with next steps. However, post that step we had to deal with Mason's team which was highly incompetent. Some of the issues that we faced with the team were repeated mistakes in the plans, our contractor being more knowledgeable than these engineers, delays in receiving deliverables due to back on forth on account of these mistakes, and mason refusing to sign off on the plans and instead deferring to his team, despite us explicitly asking for it as the team was unreliable making repeated mistakes. Other issues were around retroactive permits - before signing the contract and in the very first meeting we discussed that this is what we wanted to pursue even though its a hassle and because Mason was aligned we hired Cecilia for the permits (else we would have postponed the entire project by 5 months). However, midway through the project when I enquired about the delay, it was as if retroactive permits were never discussed and there was a huge pushback to proceed without getting county permits first. this went on for a while and finally once they moved forward there were additional problems with one of the engineers suddenly flagging x,y,z are not the responsibility of structural engineers but that county needs to approve first and contractor could proceed then. What we found extremely exasperating was that there were multiple site visits done and project was discussed in detail from the get go (each visit costing $700). However, despite that we dealt with all sorts of hiccups. We expected better for the thousands of dollars we were spending. We got so frustrated and decided to deal with the rest of the project and permits ourselves, and disengaged at that point for our mental sanity. We have decided not to trust online reviews anymore with any projects because of this experience.
