tiffany brough says, "My experience with First Continental Construction (of who spearheaded my outdoor patio extension & kitchen remodel) has been a surprisingly fantastic experience. From the outset, Marvin & Juans professionalism and genuine enthusiasm for my entire project was clearly evident. What stood out most was their exceptional character and dedication to making this renovation an absolute success. Initially I was very hesitant to trust a father and son duo to carry out such a magnitude of a project but I definitely underestimated their craftsmanship capability. Not only did they bring a wealth of expertise to the table, but they also had an incredible knack for listening. They attentively listened for every detail of my vision, offering insightful suggestions that took my project to the next level. Their ability to balance my ideas with practical solutions was truly commendable. Especially since designing has never been my strong suit. I got everything I asked for and much more. The best part of it all was that their initial price was lower than all my bids except for 1 other contractor. But the other contractor does not include any electrical work. One thing that really impressed me was their efficiency. They meticulously planned every phase of the remodel, and finished way sooner than any other contracter quoted me for. Their proactive approach, coupled with their attention to detail, made my entire process stress-free. I was hardly involved throughout the process. I am glad I made the right choice, especially after hearing many horror stories with contractors. I loved the fact that both Juan and Marvin were constantly working on my project instead of having complete strangers raid my property like the previous contractor I had working on my restroom before. Also their commitment to communication was unparalleled. They kept me in the loop every step of the way, providing regular updates on the daily progress and happily addressing any questions or concerns I had. This level of transparency and openness made me feel incredibly valued as a client. Moreover, their integrity shone through in every interaction. They went above and beyond to ensure that the project not only met but exceeded my expectations. Their work ethic can be seen on the early mornings and late nights shifts which was fine with me.In addition to their professional expertise, their kindness and reliability were a breath of fresh air. They treated my project with the same level of care and enthusiasm as if it were their own. Their positive attitude and genuine passion for their craft created an atmosphere of trust and collaboration that made the entire journey enjoyable. Thanks to marvin & Juan, my patio extension & kitchen remodel has become an absolute masterpiece. All while under my projected budget. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone seeking a dedicated, skilled professional who values integrity, quality workmanship, and client satisfaction above all else."See more

Nicky E. says, "My daughter and I hired Realtá Remodeling in November 2015 to make repairs to the interior and exterior of our home as we are preparing to sell it and we are so satisfied and impressed with Osman and his team that we are now having second thoughts about selling our home! The remodeling of our home was done absolutely perfectly and on time, everything that was listed in the contract was finished and Osman even made some touches to part of the house that were not included in the contract, which we were grateful for. We had work done to the majority of our house: Master restroom/bedroom (the shower was demolished, a new shower with tile was built, damaged sheetrock was repaired along with plumbing issues in the shower drain, countertops were refinished, leaks under the sinks were fixed, a hole in the bedroom wall was patched, the walls and ceiling were primed and painted and new carpet trim was installed.) Guest restroom (the bathtub was refinished, cabinets were replaced and new wood was installed under the sink where there was a leak, rotten baseboards were replaced.) Living/office/family/laundry room (the walls in each room were primed and painted, ceiling texture was perfectly matched, the wood frame of the windows were sanded, caulked, primed and painted, doors were replaced and painted, holes were patched.) Kitchen (countertops were refinished, new sink was installed, the walls and ceiling were primed and painted.) Exterior (rotten wood was replaced, metal was replaced and welded, both garage doors were replaced, rotten backyard siding was fixed, painting and priming were also done). We are so happy with Realtá Remodeling and Osman that we have referred him to numerous friends and family, my daughter and I highly recommend Realtá Remodeling if you are looking for an honest contractor who works hard to make you happy and follows through with the contract. Thank you Realtá Remodeling, Osman and your staff for making our remodeling process an easy one! "See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a good carpenter in Houston?

Search online to find the best carpenters in Houston. Depending on your project, you may need a custom cabinet maker, a framing contractor, or a trim or finish carpenter. For larger projects, you can even hire a general contractor who’ll be able to coordinate the work.

Before you hire, look for positive customer reviews and high ratings on their online profiles. Feel free to ask to see examples of the carpenter’s previous projects, and ask how long they’ve been in business. And don’t forget to compare prices among local pros by requesting cost estimates from at least three of them.

How do I hire the best general contractor in Houston?

You can find general contractors in Houston by searching online. Read reviews from past customers and look for photos of completed projects. You may also find information about their credentials on their profiles, or you can try verifying a general contractor’s license by visiting the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website.

Before you hire a contractor, ask for a cost estimate from several pros in Houston. Hiring a contractor to work on your home is an important decision, so feel free to take your time and compare quotes from a few pros.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How do you find a good carpenter?

To find a good carpenter near you, do the following:

  • Use Thumbtack to find a list of carpenters in your area.
  • Filter the list by selecting a specific carpentry service, such as general carpentry or cabinetry.
  • Identify carpenters who have high ratings.
  • View the carpenters’ profiles and learn more about their specialties.
  • Read their customer reviews and look at photos of their past work.

After you get a good sense of their quality of work, make sure the carpenter has the necessary credentials in your state. Then, request several cost estimates for your project(s).

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.
