FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Regular tuning fee $150, all taxes included, if applicable.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I was trained by a Piano Technicians Guild technician in 2003 in tuning and string repairs. The classes consisted of four students and a few guest speakers. Up to that point I was a seller of Young Chang and Pearl River acoustic pianos and Technics digital pianos. Before being a piano salesman, I had taken eleven and a half years of piano lessons.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
A friend who knew I taught piano suggested that I buy a tuning business from a technician he knew. A minute or two after he later informed me that he learned the man's business was already sold off, someone who knew me as a piano player (hadn't seen each other in nine or so years) just walked up and asked if I was still into piano. This individual said he knew a fellow looking for people to teach piano tuning to. The day I made inquiry into that, it turned out he was starting a course that same evening. The training schedule didn't interfere with my piano sales job, fortunately; but I subsequently dropped being a salesman.
