We bought the house two years ago and had other projects to get done first, so this area became even more overgrown than it had been when we moved in. Before they started I looked through the over growth and found saplings anywhere from four to six feet of at least two black walnuts, a couple of boxelder, an ash, a getting large catalpa, a bunch of buckthorn of various sizes, and two things I wanted to keep, a lilac that was hiding within the mess and a chokecherry that I will eventually move to our backyard. ANYWAY, because this garden “bed” had clearly been whacked back a few times in the past, the ground was a mass of root structures - especially of buckthorn root systems. Mike and Gavin worked very hard for two days (about a half day each) to get this all not just weeded, but dug up. They took great care in saving the dozens of tulip bulbs that were found (I knew there was one small patch, but they found so much more) and the rudbeckia that I had seen amongst the weeds. Also found a second chokecherry that will get moved to the backyard. Heck, Mike even carefully dug out dirt next to our porch so the boards won’t rot and then attached a rather large (4” to 5” wide?) root that remained from the boxelder cut down a few years ago and got much of it whacked away. That’s the thing…they were really flexible on what to work on as we discovered more things as time went by. They even worked a little bit longer today than expected because Gavin discovered a section in which the grass from the lawn had come well past the border edging, and the two worked to get that out before they left for the day. Our neighbors, who have been at the house for almost fifteen years, cannot believe all that they got out of the bed and keep telling us how good it looks. Now we just need to decide what is going to go in here!
