FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I painted murals for my daughters' rooms. When friends and family saw what I'd done, they proposed that I paint for a living. From there, my business began as painting and gardening--two things I love to do. I've wanted to be an interior decorator since highschool, but took a different academic course. Every professional and personal venture, however, has involved creativity and design in some capacity. One of my happy places is sitting in the home magazine section at Barnes and Noble, looking for home ideas. I love home rennovation projects and I'm handy. I enjoy building things and learn as I go. I sew. Because I love nearly everything home and seem to be domestically inclined, this seems like the perfect path for me.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
It's most importance for me to know my clients--what they like and how they use their home spaces. My first priority is to get to know them, then to learn what they envision for their homes. I offer furnishing, decor, accessory, lighting and artwork selection, flooring and countertop selection, and color (paint) consultations. Ideas come naturally. And then I hit the street, so to speak, to locate all of the elements. I check multiple sources--stores and online--for the best possible options, and determine costs along the way. I paint interior walls, paint murals, and apply specialty finishes. I stage and restage.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
All of us can walk into a furniture store and receive help from a sales associate to furnish a room. I first care about my clients and want to know how best to design their home spaces, not just sell them on expensive furnishings. Look for someone who wants to know you and your preferences, irregardless of your budget. A great designer will offer imaginative solutions for your projects and inspire your own ingenuity.
