About
I’ve spent over 40 years studying and performing music, and I love passing on the wisdom my teachers gave me. In my studio, I teach piano, bass, and guitar through a strong foundation in music theory, because understanding how music works helps beginners progress faster and play with confidence.
I work with all styles of music and enjoy seeing students light up when a new concept or song finally clicks and they can truly express themselves on their instrument.
I teach seven days a week and do my best to fit lessons into your busy schedule. All learning materials are provided during class.
If you’d like to build solid skills on piano, bass, or guitar, I’d be happy to work with you.

I've only had 3 lessons so far, but am truly enjoying the experience of learning and understanding music more deeply, almost from the aspect of mathematics and symmetry. Michael is very patient and incorporates current neurological evidence-based practices for motor learning. These lessons so far have been a true pleasure.

I have been taking piano lessons with Michael since October 2016. Micheal's approach to teaching is comprehensive and fun and is rooted in understanding the essence of the piano itself and music theory. He is very passionate about music and really enjoys teaching. He teaches with methods that are outside of traditional piano books and uses materials that build upon each weeks lessons. I have been very impressed with how much I have learned in a little over two years. Michael is a very patient instructor and learning from him has been an extremely fun and exciting experience. He truly cares that his students are learning and comprehending the material and is very in tune with how each person learns. In a little over two years I have made great progress with Michael’s teaching methods and have had great exposure to music theory, sight reading, and other music fundamentals. I am able to pick up sheet music for many songs, and while it may take me time, I am able to figure out how to play the songs. It has been so rewarding. At this time we have been tackling Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. If you want to learn to play music, desire to understand music, and want to be able to play your favorite songs, and learn to create music I would highly suggest working with Michael.

Attentive, light-hearted, obviously passionate about the music, and moves at the pace of the student. I never felt stressed or like I was given more in a lesson than I could retain. Explains concepts in an imaginative and memorable way.

Michael is a great teacher! I'm currently taking piano lessons from him and I am very satisfied. His approach is different from other teachers I had looked into and he's more affordable and flexible with scheduling your lessons! His approach with teaching music theory was a surprise to me but it has proven to be a very successful way to start teaching a begginer the piano. No need to buy several lessons in advance and he works at your pace! Highly recommended this teacher.

I signed my granddaughter up to take piano lessons from Michael, so far it’s been going really well, Micheal has a unique way of teaching that works really well with my granddaughter she is learning a lot in a short time. Michael is really attentive and uses our time wisely.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I get paid in cash and charge $75 for an hour lesson given each week in my studio.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
They call me and then we find out a good day and time for them to visit my music studio for an hour. I let them know that they will need a 3-ring notebook binder with divider tabs to separate subject matter. They may need advice on purchasing an instrument so I am able to help them with most of these beginner's questions on how to start. Additional purchases may be a metronome or a tuner for tuning guitars and bass. Keyboards should have weighted keys to build strength in the fingers and hands. I like to help them feel comfortable about all these beginning steps.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a music degree but more importantly, I have studied with some of the greatest teachers in the Seattle area. I continue to study because music is a subject that can never be limited and is ever expanding. I also have much to share regarding recording engineering, touring, and performance.
