Introduction
"Uncommon delicacy" –Downbeat Magazine ★★★★ _____ “Fine, precise, and thoughtful” –Couleurs Jazz _____ "You'll be impressed by the depth and emotion of the performances" –Richard Kamins (Step Tempest) _____ A guitarist and composer of uncommon depth and purpose, both musically and socially, Jean Chaumont has emerged as a formidable presence on the international jazz scene. Born in France, he relocated to Princeton, New Jersey in late 2014 and promptly began work on his debut album The Beauty of Differences (out June 15, 2018), featuring world-class drummer Rudy Royston and eight-time Grammy-nominated vocalist Tierney Sutton. Playing a close-miked Eastman hollow-body guitar (with subtle amplification) as well as steel- and nylon-string acoustic guitars, Chaumont summons a strikingly crisp and warm sound and imbues his compositions with a bountiful lyricism, intricacy, and rhythmic propulsion. On The Beauty of Differences, he shines at the helm of a core band with Royston, pianist Michael Bond, saxophonist Sam Sadigursky and bassist Ike Sturm. Co-producing the album with Enoch Smith, Jr., noted pianist and founder of the Misfitme music label, Chaumont devoted the proceeds to the nonprofit Villages In Partnership, with funds earmarked to provide clean and accessible water for the people of Malawi’s Sakata region, in southeastern Africa. Chaumont studied guitar with Serge Merlaud, Michel Perez, and most recently the masterful Peter Bernstein. Under the wing of Bernard Maury (a student of Nadia Boulanger), he became fascinated with the science of chords and modes. His interest in composition grew and led him to refine his skills with Pierre Bertrand and Sylvain Beuf. He has been an active member of the quintet Goud (featuring Josiah Woodson) and the duo Tema (with pianist Giuseppe de Gregorio), projects that were documented on the EPs Firstep and Glucose. Chaumont has also shared the stage with Dan Tepfer, Jon Irabagon, Thomas Marriott, Rogerio Boccato, Orlando Le Fleming, John Hadfield, Fiona Monbet, Armel Dupas, Karl Jannuska, and the Plumes Ensemble. He has been featured in festivals and venues such as Jazz at Saint Germain des près, Earshot Within, Edmonds Jazz Festival, Charlie Jazz Festival, Jazz at Vannes, Pleyel, the Olympia, Tula's, Calluna, and the Stade de France. Jean has also been commissioned for production, arrangements, compositions, and film scoring, including the full-length documentary “Le Bonheur en Suspens,” which was broadcast on French national television.

I had looked for a guitar teacher for a while to evolve both theoretically and technically, and after a trial with Jean, I immediately appreciated his adaptability to the needs of his students, his calm and his encouragements. And what about his positivism even during the weeks we spent working on some songs (argh, "Neon", by John Mayer...). To all those who wish to begin, re-start, progress, or explore other musical worlds, I particularly recommend Jean as a teacher. Beyond the encyclopedic knowledge of music that his years of high-level training brought him, Jean can make you work scales, harmony and rotating arpeggios but also hard rock power-chords, Brazilian Bossa-Nova, American or French Pop. Of course, don't forget to go see him playing live, it's just a delight for the ears. And who knows, he may invite you on stage for a song (as he did with me) for your baptism of fire in the spotlight!

Learning the guitar from Jean was not only joyful, but it was a time for healing through music. I also learned a lot of techniques.

I started out piano as a beginner and Jean helped me to become an intermediate. The music he chose to teach us was very good and I enjoyed it a lot

Thanks Timmy. Yes you progressed well in one year! I hope you like your new school and new house in Chicago.

Jean is an experienced music teacher. I have taken other guitar lessons and never felt like I made much progress. With Jean, in just my first lesson I felt like I had already advanced and was motivated to continue working on my own at home. He is patient and a pleasure to be around, striking the right balance between encouragement and nudging his students to go further.

Jean had good rapport with my son, who enjoyed this first experience with guitar lessons. Jean's sense of humor was appreciated. The varied approach included basic music theory, warm-up exercises, chords and popular songs. Jean is an excellent guitar teacher and we enthusiastically recommend him.
