UPDATE:
One of the supervisors (Steve) reached out after they saw my review. He said he wanted to make things right and offered to make a refund, which I agreed to. The day of the service I noticed that the rail was not straight and even when I told the technicians about it, they said it was OK. I mentioned this to the supervisor and he offered to send someone to fix it, which they did. So, even when my overall experience wasn't outstanding, I appreciate the fact that they noticed my review and made a good effort to ammend things.
ORIGINAL POST:
The spring/torsion system of my garage door got damaged and I sent a quote request through Thumbtack to get it fixed. Someone from Allen Garage Door reached out and they told me a technician could stop by my place to do a free assessment and estimate. I appreciated the fact that they replied super fast to my online inquiry, especially because it was a bit late in the evening. Two technicians stopped by to assess the damage and told me they would charge $400 just to remove the torsion system. I thought it was a bit pricey but I wanted to get the job done. Once the system was removed it, one of the technicians proceeded to give me an estimate, indicating that they'd have to change the brackets, the cable, the large tube where you put the springs, and springs as well. He said they had two options for the springs: one made in China that only had 1 year warranty and another one made in CA with 3 years warranty. I don't remember the price of the former option, but the difference in price was about $250 or so, but given how little I knew about torsion systems I thought, well let's go with the second option, specially because this guy REALLY made it sound like there was a big difference in quality. They quoted $600 to 750 for EACH spring, and said the price would depend on the length of the door (I later realised they had already measured the length, so I have no idea why they gave me a range). I know I should have Google'd before saying yes, but I was a bit desperate since I couldn't open my garage and had to go to work the next morning. Now I know that the average price of the springs is $100 to $200. By the end of the night I ended up paying $3,000 to get the brackets, cable, tube, and springs replaced. I paid $1500 for the springs alone! I did some research and similar jobs cost on average $800 to $900. I feel like an idiot because I'm sure I overpaid for this service. I really hope others don't have to go through this, I paid a very expensive mistake so please avoid this company at all costs, but if for whatever reason you decide to work with them, PLEASE triple check the prices with other companies first. They overcharge and inflate the prices and take advantage of people like myself that really don't know what's the average price for these things. The technicians were also pushing REALLY HARD to sell me a new garage opener, that would cost me between $1500 to $2000!! My garage opener is less than 5 years old, and after I declined to purchase a new one, they said they were going to try to "fix it", but it'd take 45 mins or more. However, in less than 5 minutes they “solved” the problem, and charged me another $275 to "repair the opener". I should also mention that when I finally got the invoice once they completed the job, I noticed that the invoice was not from Allen Garage Door, and when I asked the technicians why they simply said "it's a sister company". I wouldn't be surprised if Allen Garage Door has a general contractor licence, and they subcontract the job to smaller companies, and because everyone wants to get a piece of the pie, they inflate the prices. Another option is that they simply take advantage of people and charge absurd prices. I reached out to the company before adding this review, but they didn't reply. I think they're happy now that they have cashed out the fat check. I'm sure there are many companies out there that are actually honest with their customers and charge fair prices for their services. Take your business somewhere else, this company doesn’t deserve your money.

The sensor is malfunctioning, and it’s not worth repairing, so I’ve decided to replace it with a new Chamberlain one. The only downside is that the cabling requires multiple extensions, which doesn’t look very aesthetically pleasing.

The technician came the day we called the service and fixed the door on the spot, it was a simple fix but he took time to explain what future options could be for the door (it's a really old garage) without pushing for us to upgrade right now. Will definitely use this team when the time comes to install a new door!
