I hired Juan to attempt to remove rust stains on my concrete patio and concrete sidewalk caused by incorrect application of lawn fertilizer a few months ago. Juan was very responsive and showed up the next day as he promised. He brought the necessary rust-removal chemical and all the necessary protection and cleaning equipment. The stains proved to be very stubborn though. Juan kept persevering and spent pretty much the old day repeating the cleaning process, and even drove back to the store to buy more chemical in between. The end result was that the stains on the patio faded to the point that they don't bother me anymore, while the ones one the sidewalk are still quite visible. Juan took accountability for what he called a failure and volunteered to not get any compensation for his work. While I did not achieve my goal (especially on the sidewalk) I totally appreciated his hard work, perseverance, accountability, and general desire to do the right thing for the customer. I decided to still pay him a good fraction of the original estimate, although I'm sure it was far from being sufficient to compensate him for all the effort he put into it.
