It's one thing to make a mistake. It's quite another to be bad at what you do, communicate poorly, and then go back on your word to make it right. I can't recommend in strong enough terms to absolutely avoid Joe and JJ's Asphalt.
This happened back in August 2018. When setting up an appointment to come by and look at our property to scope the project, Joe was responsive and gave a competitive bid. The requirements were to widen our driveway on both sides; one of which was to add a path to our shop garage. In addition, we wanted a french drain installed along the entire length of the driveway to handle water runoff. Finally, we needed care to be taken around the water meter access.
Joe promised that he would cut in a new drain and bury the line around the side of the house, finishing it in a nice graveled drain access box. He also promised that he would make a nice frame around the water meter access. He failed to deliver on either of these, and made a number of other mistakes, which I'll outline below:
- The "french drain" was a series of plastic drain segments. This wouldnt have been a problem, except for the fact that they were installed crooked and uneven. You can see from one of the pictures just have off kilter they are. Not to mention that the channel cut across the existing driveway was done uneven and not level with the front of the garage. AND, they got black tar all over the top of the drains, never protecting them with tape before laying down asphalt.
- Instead of building a drain all across the entire driveway, they cheaped out and made a "hump" in front of the shop garage door to try and guide water into the end of the drain run. The only problem? By building that hump, they made it impossible for me to open my shop garage door. I'm not kidding - I was completely unable to open the door no matter what because of how they hacked in a water route solution.
- The piping they ran around the side of the house? I had to dig it up because of another project I was working on in my side yard, and found that they low-centered it about 10 feet short of the end cap. Yeah, water would be carried barely past the end of the driveway, and just collect there, because last I checked, water doesn't run uphill.
- The box they promised would be put at the end of the drain with gravel and a grate? Never happened. They left an open-ended plastic pipe sitting in the middle of my yard.
- I've included a picture to show their "solution" for the water meter access. An orange cone. When I pressed Joe (and had to chase him on the phone for weeks), he finally dropped off a rusty piece of sheet metal, and propped it up with broken chunks of asphalt, I kid you not.
- The new asphalt started to show cracks and bulges almost immediately after sealing. Joe told me it was because they sealed it too early and didn't allow the gases to escape long enough before sealing. I never pressed them to seal it early; it was entirely their decision to time it the way they did. After again having to hound Joe to get him to return my calls and texts, he said they would come back in April or May (note this is August we're talking about at this point!) - and at that point they would cut holes into the asphalt and patch the (about 8) numerous cracks that had already developed. So brand new asphalt, and I was going to be looking at a hacky patch job already, if I could just wait 7 months!
- His team made a mess of my brand new siding / paint job, as well as my trim. If you've ever gotten tar on wood, you know it's about impossible to remove without destroying the wood. I had to discover this myself, and when I brought it to Joe's attention there was no offer to remedy let alone an apology.
- Throughout the project, I had an awful time getting ahold of Joe. The work was pushed multiple times due to one delay or another, and often times I would be expecting his team onsite and they would simply not show up, nor call.
So, just horrible work. I wanted to give Joe a chance to remedy this, but not by having his guys onsite to do any more damage. They clearly did shoddy work, did not pay attention to detail and even worse, damaged my property. I reached out to Joe and asked him to return a portion of the cost. He wanted to instead come back out and "fix it", but I declined knowing the quality of work he and his team performed. He agreed to return half of the money I paid him. That was about a month ago. Since then I have had to chase him, and his rare responses and promises to reach back out to me have been nothing but lies. He has gone back on his promise to refund half the money, and now has gone dark via phone and text.
Given that I was tired of seeing my newly-renovated home with such an ugly driveway, I finally bit the bullet and hired someone to tear the entire thing out, and pour concrete. Upon tearing up the new asphalt that Joe's team laid down, it was clear that they did not properly prep the surface underneath the new asphalt. It was a complete hack job! The concrete folks were stunned at the poor workmanship.
I honestly question so many of these reviews that JJ's Asphalt has. Maybe they're legitimate and I do hope that no one else has had to suffer monetarily as we have. But just as I'm quick to praise work done right, I can't in good conscience recommend anyone give JJ's Asphalt as much as a phone call.
Bad work is bad work, and at least that can be remedied with reimbursement. But when I'm lied to and someone goes against their word and refuses to make a mistake right, they'll never get business from me again, nor from anyone whom I speak to about this type of stuff.
