Private piano lessons are currently being offered in the Reston area by Donna Whited, an experienced , degreed teacher with advanced training (DMA-Eastman School of Music). I have been teaching in the Reston area since 2005.
Currently, I have places for beginning to advanced students in my schedule. I offer private lessons with varied lesson lengths (30, 45, 60 minutes) depending on the age and level of the student .
The emphasis of these lessons is progressive instruction of music fundamentals, piano technique, theory & literature, in preparation to perform classical music.
There are many performance opportunities offered throughout the year (studio classes, recital, auditions, and festival participation).
I am a member of MTNA, VMTA, NVMTA, and American College of Musicians, where I serve as an adjudicator.

Dr. Whited has been instructing my teenage son for about 90 days. He is a classical musician who has several years of musical experience on the string bass. He is an accomplished high school string bass player who participates in several local symphonic orchestras. He wanted to take piano lessons over the summer break to obtain a proficiency on the piano that he could use as he approaches college, and potentially a career in music. As a young adult with a lot of technical knowledge of classical music, the challenge was to create an educational environment that was interesting enough to keep him fully engaged, while providing instruction on the beginner-level basics that he needs on the piano. Dr. Whited has done an outstanding job of providing this education in an interesting and challenging manner. We are still taking lessons (at the request of my son who does not want to quit now that school is starting) and hopefully my son will accomplish more than just basic piano proficiency as he moves forward with his instruction over the next year or so. Whatever the outcome is, we feel like Dr. Whited has the maturity, professionalism, flexibility and experience to provide him with the individual approach that he needs. We highly recommend her to all prospective students of all ages as an outstanding teacher.

Ms. Whited instructs my 9 year old twins. She is a talented and well-qualified piano teacher who is extremely attentive and thorough in every lesson. She is always willing to go that extra mile to ensure that they are maximizing their ability to learn and grow. It has been a great joy to see the significant progression my children have demonstrated since they started lessons with Ms. Whited two years ago. We plan to stay with Ms. Whited for many years to come!

My daughter is a teen, and she has been taking piano lessons from Mrs. Whited for about two years now. Since the first day she has been enjoying her lessons. After my daughter came back home from her first piano lesson her excitement was beyond what I expected. I enjoy listening to my daughter practicing her piano pieces at home, and I always see improvements. Thanks to Mrs. Whited for her outstanding effort, and for going above and beyond what parents expect.

My six-year-old son started taking piano lessons with Mrs. Whited since May 2014. I like her balanced teaching method which keeps my son interested and encouraged. I am very impressed with my sons progress in just 6 months. Mrs. Whited is an excellent teacher.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I ask for payment at the beginning of each month for the number of lessons that are in the month. (Either 4 or 5 lessons).
I do not give refunds or carry over lessons to the next month in case of cancellation, but will reschedule a missed lesson to a mutually convenient time.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I try to get to know the learning style of the student, and determine if the family has had previous experience with music lessons. I also try to figure out the personality of the student and tailor my approach to the individual student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have an elite educational background, with graduate degrees in music performance that include a doctorate of music from a major conservatory (Eastman School of Music-University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y.) as well as a Masters Degree from the University of Michigan(Ann Arbor , Michigan) and European training at a French conservatory near Paris. I have played many concerts, both in the United States and Europe. I have taught privately in the Northern Virginia area since 2005, and have previously taught at the college level.
