Introduction
I have fifteen years of experience teaching guitar and offer options to suit any learning style, ranging from standard one-on-one lessons, to more flexible coaching options. I love music and I love the guitar. All kinds, from blue grass to electric blues to free jazz. I studied jazz and classical guitar in college and performed in masterclasses for numerous world-class concert guitarists, including Ana Vidovic, Manuel Barrueco, and Andrew York. Following graduation, I moved to New York City, where I worked as a gigging jazz guitarist and studied with musicians like Peter Bernstein and Brad Shepik. Teaching students to make the music they love is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. I’m also very good at it. I've studied guitar pedagogy and been teaching private students, classrooms, and music store guitar studios since I was in high school. I love helping people do something they're proud of ... helping them use the guitar to explore their interests in more depth than they thought possible... helping them explore new and exciting music. I am located in Virginia and teach on Zoom. For all my students, I put in extra time to ensure that I’m available to answer any questions they might have during the week. I offer 30-minute, 45-minute, and 1-hour lessons. The first two weeks, are week-to-week, after which I book lessons monthly. For students interested in more flexibility, I offer a $20 weekly rate for remote coaching. That includes access by email and messaging, two video responses, and pdf materials each week, personalized for each student’s needs. Please reach out!

I have been playing guitar lightly on and off for 30 years. I have been around guitar enough to somewhat discern talent and skill. When I decided I wanted to start over and learn classical guitar from a professional teacher I went hunting for a great teacher. Before starting lessons with Peter I met with a couple other guitar teachers and gauged them against others I have known. I chose Peter because I found him to be everything I was looking for. Peter is smart. He is both a highly skilled player and a talented teacher. He is dedicated to teaching guitar vs teachers who don’t primarily play guitar or teachers who don’t have any training in guitar pedagogy. Peter is a great communicator in general, which has helped us navigate my complicated schedule and tailor my instruction to my needs and interests. Peter seems to be flexible and realistic with the curriculum he devised for me and the goals we set. Peter has a great personality for teaching. In the journey of developing guitar skill, I think he is a great guide. He knows the art, he knows how to teach it, he knows how to do hard things, how to overcome challenges, and he has a deep trove of experiences to draw from in lessons. My lessons with him have been fun, helpful, and well structured. For the kind of guitar playing I am interested in, my search is over, Peter is a great teacher.

After playing for quite a while and working with different teachers I started taking lessons with Peter and must say that his approach made a big impact on my approach to the instrument. Peter was able to provide me with insights that not only made me break out of my all too familiar playing patterns but also lead to an immediate improvement in my playing and overall understanding of the guitar.

Peter is an excellent teacher - he is very patient, knowledgeable, a GREAT guitarist and has excellent command of the guitar. His explanations are clear and easy to understand and if you don't get it, he'll find another way to explain things! Peter's the man!

Peter helped me to develop a sound understanding of the fundamental elements of music theory over a short period of time through excellent communication and demonstration. Peter impressed me most with his professionalism and patience. He arrived early to our lesson and was totally focused on my needs throughout the entire lesson and has continued to do so every time we have worked together. My confidence in his ability as an instructor is unparallelled. I cannot recommend him enough.

Peter is a great teacher--he is patient and kind and willing to take the time to answer questions so that you not only learn how to play music but also learn why what you're playing makes sense allowing you to grow and play on your own with the music theory he is willing to share. I highly recommend Peter to anyone looking to learn--he is a talented musician and cares about his students.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Absolutely. I take lessons with players I admire and respect. It's incredibly important to me that I continue to take lessons with instructors and performers who can find weak spots in my playing and challenge me to make the strengths. It's a life-long pursuit!

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I studied guitar with a handful of people who made a huge impact on my progression as a guitarist - but the one that stands out is my first guitar teacher. He lit a fire under me and taught me in a way that made me curious and self-sufficient and ten years later I have a degree in music and still play with every free minute I have. That first guitar teacher literally changed the course of my life. The idea that I could do the same for some other kid is really exciting!

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Go with someone you like who you're comfortable with but be ready to practice! A good teacher should be able to guide you but making it happen is all you!
