I love teaching music and guitar. Unlike many teachers in this field, teaching is my passion. I want to help you bring music into your life. I love bringing music into people's lives every day, making a top quality musical education available to my community, and engendering greater musical creativity in my students. Because teaching is my passion, I have made a point of seeking the best education for myself, so that I will have have all the necessary tools to help you. I am highly accomplished and educated: My education is broad and deep. I am the only rock/jazz/folk guitar instructor you will find who has studied with both Mick Goodrick and W.A. Mathieu. I can offer you solid fundamentals, and take you as far as you would like to go. I am not just a player who tutors. I am an educator. Electric guitarists: I can offer you not only lessons, but a student ensemble to play music with. I found Dan via Thumbtack and couldn't be more pleased. It's clear that he wants to help me become the guitar player I want to be - making the effort to understand the styles of music I wish to play and areas where I want to improve. Dan tailors lesson plans to the individual, which makes the journey of musicianship that much more personal. I'm excited to meet the guitarist I become through Jam Class.

You think you know guitar... but you have know idea. I have played guitar on and off for over 15 years, including practicing with introductory lessons as a kid, self-learning, open mics, and playing covers and originals with several bands. I would consider myself an "intermediate" player... Nearly one year into lessons with Dan Cohn and my world has changed. For those of you who don't want to read to much further, let me just say - he will transform your playing and take you to the next level. More details: I have had the awesome experience of advancing my rhythm guitar playing, learning how to "truly play" in a band and ensemble setting, and enhance my lead guitar playing, in addition to significantly improving music theory. Without a doubt, Dan is a virtuoso - a master of music practically without any arrogance of airs. If you can dedicate the time and determination to improve your guitar playing, Dan will create a customized path to help you meet your goals. Most importantly, he is an awesome person creating a very cool, inclusive community of musicians through his JamClass program, which aligns your individual lessons and study with real-life application during JamClasses, playing songs with an ensemble of other students. Improving your skills in anything is hard and takes work, Dan expects you to put in the time and effort - and if you do, you will be seriously rewarded and excited about how much you can accomplish!

Daniel understands how to teach by breaking skills down in ways that make them easy to learn, practice, and master. He pays attention to the seemingly "small" details of playing guitar, such as posture or the transition between chords. But he's really teaching students how to hear and explore music without the fear of getting it wrong. I have gained a lot of traction with Daniel. And I was worried because I was stalling out prior to taking lessons with him. I was even contemplating giving up playing altogether. How I feel like I have a road ahead of me with guitar and the unique form of expression that is music, which is something I really care a lot about.

I have been a guitar player for a long time, but have always missed out on two of the most important components of musicianship; playing with other people, and instruction. Jam class takes care of both. By attending Jam Class, I am afforded the opportunity to regularly hone my guitar and vocal skills in a group setting. Having Dan present during the jam offers immediate feedback on what sounded good, and what needs improvement. Jam Class also helps drive some of the topics discussed my private lessons, keeping the instruction applicable and interesting. For me, Jam Class is everything I've ever wanted musically; a growing confidence in my own stage presence, the shared experience of playing live music with like minded people, and the growth of my harmonic vocabulary.

I came to Dan for guitar lessons but the breadth of his experience allowed me to get so much more. Dan has helped me develop my ability as a guitar player, vocalist, and public performer. His ability to build Jam Class from the ground up speaks to his abilities both as a one-on-one teacher and as a group leader. He's put together an incredibly welcoming community of musicians of all skill levels who genuinely enjoy each other's company, and that's not easy to find.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I do. My teaching pedigree is one of my best, and most important selling points. I have invested deeply in many musical traditions and teachers to be able to offer a quality education. I currently study composition and music education with W.A. Mathieu, author of several influential music books including 'Harmonic Experience'. I also maintain relationships with my past mentors including Mick Goodrick (teacher of Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, John Scofield...), Ran Blake (founder of Third Stream Department at New England Conservatory) and Larry Snitzler (George Mason University Guitar Dept. head and student of Andrés Segovia).
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I can honestly say that teaching music is my calling. As a musician raised by college professors, I always had a keen interest in music and education.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I teach technique, music theory, transcribe songs and guitar solos, teach transcriptions, and lead a band of my students through classic and modern rock songs.
