- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I typically receive the manuscript and talk with the author about whether or not they have specific moments in mind for illustration. If they do, I work with them in how those illustrations will coincide with the text. Some people have a very clear vision of what they want and the exact moments they want illustrated. Other people leave it up to me. If you don’t have a clear vision of the illustrations that you would like, I will look at the script and make some suggestions as to what I think stands out in the story and should be illustrated. I usually go with what’s most visually interesting. My goal is to enhance the story and engage the reader. Once I start illustrating, I will send you illustrations as I go along, so that you can see how it’s coming together or redirect me in any way.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I am a pet portrait artist and I’ve been doing that since 2015. It started after I painted a portrait of my dog and posted online. Several people asked if I took commissions. Now I have more than 150 portraits under my belt of both pets and people. I used to only be busy around Christmas time, but in the past couple of years it has become more year-round and I was able to quit my day job! Late 2019, a friend asked if I’d be interested in illustrating a children’s book. His friend had a cousin Mike, who had been looking for an illustrator for his book called Fiba. I actually didn’t feel comfortable doing it, but I said I’d give it a shot. Then the pandemic hit… At the time I was working at one of those paint and sip places and as an actress in an educational play that traveled to schools. Both those jobs came to an end because of the pandemic. I had started illustrating Fiba and it was going really well. I realized that I could turn the play into a children’s book as well! I suggested that to the director of the theater company who decided it was a great idea. So suddenly I was illustrating two books and enjoying it! Since then I have illustrated two more books for Mike and another book for another friend called Old Man Hammock Pants. I kind of fell into it, but it has become my passion as an artist. I am incredibly excited to work with more authors on bringing their vision to life!
