Introduction
I DO NOT TEACH IN-PERSON anymore, ONLY ONLINE lessons :) I have a full setup where you can see my hands and hear my piano just as you would see and hear me play in person My goal is to keep students interested so that they continue progressing to get to their goal of playing and enjoying the piano. I try to patiently not put too much pressure on my students since I feel like often learning piano can be frustrating enough. It definitely is a long term game that takes a number of years to develop and so I try to encourage my students to get over that “hump” when it's hard to see the progress in themselves I have taught over 100 students from age 5 to over 50, online & in-person since 2015 long before online teaching was common. Though I only teach online now, I still have 2 students I have taught for those 10 years. (One started in first grade and is now in high school doing an amazing job, and even learning music theory, improvisation and how to compose). Curriculum I like the Piano Pronto Book and Alfred Book series that I grew up on. I feel like it gives a good basic understanding with songs that are relevant, but I have used other book series as well and can be flexible with that. My Background I am also an award winning composer that can help students learn to improvise or even compose for those interested. In addition to winning Two national Student Emmys while at Brigham Young University, I have recorded my music with some of the best players in Hollywood at Capital Studios and Budapest, Hungary. I recently created “Hollywood Christmas” album on my Youtube where I composed, conducted, and produced the whole album myself. So for those who are interested, I like to also teach other skills like music theory and recognizing things better by ear. At BYU I used to play piano for Ballet classes and Modern Dance classes where I would either sightread a full binder of music, or learned to play by ear, improvising on the spot continuously. I can also help students learn to SIGHTREAD better since it was a skill I couldn’t do at all but received some help and now can sightread very well for anyone such as singers, choirs or the like.

My son really enjoyed his piano lesson with Richard! He was kind, patient and was great at assessing areas my son needs more practice. He was also very skilled at giving corrections in a positive and fun way, which was so nice as my son can be sensitive. Much thanks!

I have taken piano lessons from Richard for almost 10 years now (I think I was one of his first students). I used to do them in person, but then Covid happened and I made the switch to online. One thing I like about Richard is due to his musical composition background, you can really approach the piano however you like. If you would like to focus on improv, you can. If you want more of a traditional approach, you can. If you want to understand more of the theory, you can. Right now, I've been focusing on scales and key signatures which is helping my sight reading a lot. He also tries to incorporate stuff that you like in teaching you. For example, when I was doing key signature stuff, I happened to have some pokemon sheet music and we took a section of it and I had to practice playing that section in different key signatures. And despite it being online, he is able to see where I may be messing up in my fingering and technic.

Richard has been my daughter’s online piano teacher for the past five years, and I couldn’t be more pleased with her progress under his guidance. He is patient, kind, and incredibly encouraging, allowing her to learn at her own pace while steadily advancing through her lesson books. His teaching style fosters both skill development and a genuine love for music. Beyond technical instruction, Richard has played a key role in my daughter’s personal growth, helping her build confidence and discipline in her extracurricular activities. His ability to make lessons enjoyable while maintaining structure has been invaluable. I highly recommend Richard to anyone looking for a dedicated and supportive piano instructor. He has been a fantastic asset to our family, and we’re grateful for his expertise.

I can’t say enough good things about Richard! He was great to work with. Our kids made a lot of progress with him. He took the time to understand each kid’s style and needs and tailored his approach with them accordingly.
