Introduction

In addition to extensive performing experience, I am a Vic Firth Endorsed Educator, a member of TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association) and PAS (Percussive Arts Society). All of these organizations share my commitment to quality music education. I customize a lesson plan based on each students' unique needs, interests and learning style. This adaptability engages students right away and keeps them committed to progressing on their instrument. I enjoy working with students at all levels. I've worked with beginners from learning their first beat to joining their first band, and going on national tours. I've helped students successfully navigate music school applications, and auditions. I've guided professionals through troubleshooting their technique to improve overall playing. I have spent the the last 40 years studying drums and percussion, and have been teaching for 25 years. I enjoy sharing the knowledge I have acquired with students to help attain his or her musical goals. My excitement for percussion transfers to my students, encouraging them to practice and excel.

My son has only been with Rob for a month, but I'm impressed with how patient, kind and fun he is. My son loves the lessons and really likes Rob. Rob is great with the kids and a great communicator with the parent. His studio is inviting and conveniently located. I highly recommend starting lessons with Rob if your child is wanting to learn to play the drums. Rob knows how to make practice feel fun while teaching the core of learning to play drums.

I loved having Rob as my drum teacher. He taught me so many tricks, warm-ups, and other skills that used throughout the four years that he was teaching me. He is very flexible with his scheduling and the environment in which he gave lessons was superb. I would highly recommend him for beginners, intermediate, and even advanced drummers because there is always something that he could teach you.

We went to a few teachers to talk about lessons and had a couple of intro lessons. I felt like Rob knew how to approach my son in order to reach him so he could learn. Rob also goes at the speed that challenges him but not overwhelms him. Great teacher.

I have been a wanna be drummer most all of my life. I have done a lot of finger tapping to all kinds of music and study drums in every song that I hear on the radio. When in my 50s, I got a snare drum one Christmas, and that put me on a path that I had always wanted to follow. Rob Tovar was recommended as an instructor and he is absolutely the best. He didnt care, at all, about my age and he guides me through the curriculum at a pace that is comfortable for me. He is very patient and flexible and he knows his stuff. He is quick to compliment and always ready to introduce the next rhythm or exercise. That snare quickly grew into a full kit which enabled me to take full advantage of the instruction that I was receiving. After about 1.5 years with Rob, I had the opportunity to play part time with my Church band. Without Robs guidance and encouragement, I would never have been able to take that step. A few months later, I began to play every Sunday and I absolutely love it. My lessons with Rob remain a very import part of my path as I continue to grow. He has (and continues to) provide me with the tools necessary to know that I can contribute as a Drummer. What a cool title to have. I would happily recommend Rob Tovar to anyone, of any age and experience level, without hesitation. He really is the BEST!

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Each student's abilities and goals are unique, so I develop a custom lesson plan for each student. Your first lesson consists of two parts: a discussion of goals and expectations, and a low-stress playing assessment. I'll lead you through a series of exercises designed to quickly and accurately find your strengths and areas for improvement.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I regularly work with other professional drummers to further my playing and teaching abilities. Notable Famous Drummers: Louise Belson (Jazz Great), Greg Bissonette (David Lee Roth), Zoro (Lenny Kravitz), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Tommy Aldridge (Ozzy, Whitesnake) & Teddy Campbell (American Idol).
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I have had a passion for drums and teaching since my first student in 1991. I have been teaching professionally since 1999.
