FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I'd ask that a person please contact me, because each project should be uniquely priced. Example: Your book might call for 24 pages of art, but if it primarily revolves around a few scene elements, it could be less expensive than a few posters depicting Civil War armies clashing, due to the amount of time spent researching proper reference and the sheer number of historically accurate elements in those scenes. Talk it over. I usually work under a cost per-image payrate since I transfer full copyright to the author, but in the end, it all comes down to the amount of time it takes.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
It's rather straightforward: 1) We talk the whole project over, preferably over the phone or a Zoom meeting, etc. I try to get a very complete picture of expectations. 2) We contract the project, to set those expectations professionally. Beyond illustration, book design is on offer, as is editing advice and marketing advice. 3) I sketch a book over several weeks. We meet again to talk about moving into final work. 4) I finish final work over several weeks. We meet to discuss what's needed to bring the book to fruition.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated from Columbus College of Art & Design, with a BFA in illustration. My partial list of awards is as such: I have been a featured illustrator of over 36 issues of ODYSSEY Magazine, and was the sole illustrator chosen for their retrospective sci-fi collection. I've garnered several awards for my work, including many international competitions such as Best of Fantasy, Society of Illustrators West #45, as well as THREE Mom's Choice Awards in 2011, 2012 and 2016. My work for "Princess Willow & the Magic Fairy Brush" won Creative Child Magazine's Product of the Year: 2016. Though, all-in-all, though, I count being voted in by the kids for a "Children's Choice Award" as my favorite recognition.
