FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Some of the projects that you see listed on my account are going to seem like high rates. A lot of the work that I did was in Nantucket, MA and the rates for work are very different there. They get a lot of heavy weather there and so they use top tier wood when building outside, and it cost time and money to get it there and to use it properly. I have two pricing models, fixed-rate pricing and materials and labor. I charge 65$/hr for materials and labor rates, and a 35% increase on material costs. This is very low for the Austin area. Fixed rate pricing includes the materials and the labor and is usually an even number. Fixed rate pricing gives you the peace of mind knowing exactly what you will pay. If something comes up that makes the project go over budget, I eat the cost, you only ever pay the agreed upon fixed price.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Typically we have a consultation that lasts 1-2hours where we will get to know each other and discuss the vision for the project. We go over the details of what is desired and how to achieve it. If permits and designs are needed there will be a second or third consult to review these plans. This can also be done digitally via email. Once everything is in place a contract is agreed upon with a scope of work and pricing terms. Then construction begins!
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I grew up with my Dad being a carpenter. He would take me out on jobs as a young boy and I would hammer the nails for the joist bracket and move lumber. I tried out sales, the food service, and a few other things, but eventually came back to carpentry. It's what I love to do. I have a few years of experience as a business owner in both California and Massachusetts, and I have taken courses on Home Renovations and Remodeling through Penn Foster.
