Hey I'm Derek! I have had the privilege of being a wedding DJ for about 10 years now. I officially launched ONYX in 2020 as a way for customers to experience a “one stop shop” for their wedding/event needs. We offer DJ, Photography, Videography, Photo booth, Lighting, Hair and Makeup. I began my DJing job in Austin, TX with one of the TOP Wedding service companies in the U.S. and my mentor was voted #1 DJ in Austin! As a Nashville singer/musician, I love bringing fun and creativity to the dance floor. The wedding experience is something that is to be cherished and remembered forever. The idea of making even the slightest positive difference in the way the special night is remembered is what drives me to take my job very seriously and have lots of enthusiasm. Whether it be creating a unique playlist to your taste, getting your people on the dance floor, or just checking in with the wedding coordinator, I will always make sure the couple is taken care of throughout the night. The crew arrived late. I had paid for 3 hours. Machine did not work properly. Had to wait about 30 minutes before machine actually worked. Otherwise once functioning properly it was gine.

Jay did an AWESOME job at our event!!! Everyone loved him and he was very professional and FUN! We had to move our original set up and he was so kind about it! Our event at Macy’s was very successful and he definitely contributed to that! We already miss him!!!

My husband and I struggled finding a DJ on wedding websites. I heard about thumbtack and found Derek. Thank goodness I did! Derek was very responsive. We booked him quickly too. He said if we had any questions at any time to email or text him. He responded within a few hours. We filled out the ceremony and reception music playlist a month before the wedding and we were able to share a spotify playlist with him, which was used for the background and cocktail hour music. About a week or two before the wedding, he contacted us with our actual wedding DJ, Dominic. Dominic showed up super early and I received nothing but great compliments from our wedding guests. Derek and Dominic were professional from start to finish. Thanks again!!

Our wedding could not have been complete without some Motown, 70s, and 80s and our dj was perfect for this. They kept in contact and were helpful as well as friendly. They had a form to fill out with songs we wanted, didn't want, and also many other things I would have never even thought about talking to the dj about. After completing the form the dj actually reached out to us and went over everything just to make sure so our wedding night would run smoothly. It was a blast for us and our guests and would recommend them to everyone I know. If you book them, you will not be disappointed.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My typical pricing is based on 4 hours and within 30 miles of Nashville. Any extra hours or mileage I have to factor in a different pricing. But please don't hesitate to reach out and see if we can make it work!
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I love meeting new couples, telling them about myself and answering any and all questions they may have. I have a detailed questionnaire for them to fill out for ceremony and reception to help organize everything and make sure that nothing goes unchecked. I will then either meet face-to-face, call, or facetime the couple to discuss all the details of the wedding or event to ensure a stress-free night!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a music producer in Nashville and I have a lot of experience singing/playing music in bands. In addition, I was trained by Austin, Tx's #2 DJ and worked for one of the top companies in the U.S. as a wedding DJ!
