Have been playing guitar on and off for 5-6 years but was entirely self taught and lacking in many of the basics that I should have learned when I first started. While I can somewhat improvise, play full songs on both electric and acoustic, and know my basic scales, I just found myself starting to hit a wall where I wished for more direct instruction without having to jump from YouTube video to video to find one that sticks out. I tried lessons in the past, but my old teacher only gave me written tabs for songs and didn’t teach me about the actual theory behind anything. As I’ve gotten more serious about playing in the last 2 years or so, it was time to find a teacher who could pinpoint and fill in all of those theory gaps that were holding me back from improvising, writing my own music, and from confidently performing in a band. I’m only 3 weeks into lessons, but I could tell from day 1 that John is the guy that I needed! John is clearly extremely knowledgeable in all areas of the guitar and with musical theory in general, and he was immediately able to identify the top areas for me to work on. He gave me a custom packet to work through based on my current level, and we’ve been plugging away at the material each week. Not only does John believe in teaching from a foundational aspect of music, but he has also given me lots of great tips on if I were to perform live and record in the studio one day. He told me that his goal is for every student to be able to record their own music by the time that they are done working with him, and I have no doubt I will get there one day with his help! It’s almost overwhelming working with a musician as experienced as John because it will make you realize that even if you’ve been playing for years on your own time, you haven’t even scratched the surface! Whether you want to learn how to play simple songs, play live with a band, improvise in all genres, or record and write your own music, John is your guy!

I have played the guitar for many years without the knowledge of theory. I desired to improve my playing and understanding of music by hiring John, and he has done an excellent job! I have only been his student for a little over a year, but I am already light years ahead from where I started!

Since being a student of Stockdale School I have learned so much about the guitar. Mr. Stockdale is an amazing teacher. He makes learning fun, believes in having a fun lesson and then having a work lesson, and allows you to pick what you want to learn about on your fun days. He teaches about all the different aspects of music. He makes sure that you understand what you are being taught. This is an amazing atmosphere to learn about music.
