Jodi Ireland says, "A few days before Easter, I took my dad to check out Like New Pianos. We were greeted immediately by Monica, and told her we were there to browse and see what they had. Dad's 95 and has been a musician his whole life (HS choir director, church organist + he played in live & studio bands and plenty of clubs when he was younger in other words, he knows his stuff).I grew up with playing our Steinway, which he sold some years back because it needed substantial restoration. He replaced it with a Young Chang which he doesn't particularly like the action isn't great and it just doesn't have that rich Steinway sound. He was hoping to perhaps find something else or at least talk to the folks at Like New to see if he had any options like a trade-in.Monica immediately offered to call her husband Jason, who's the real piano guru, so while we waited for him to arrive, Dad spent time playing various instruments, including one of their Steinways (a C or D, I think?). Its sound was luscious. I noodled around on a different Steinway, and the action was perfect and the sound rich.Since that visit (which was about two hours), Dad's already taken another musician friend and spread the word about this wonderful gem of a shop and its lovely owners to several of his other friends. They are kind, gracious, patient, and knowledgable. I'm so happy they opened their shop, and I wish them many years of success."See more

Request quotes from several piano turners in your area for a more accurate cost estimate.

Is piano tuning hard?

Tuning a piano can be difficult if you haven’t done it before and don’t have the correct tools. For example, you’ll need a piano tuning lever, tips, electronic chromatic tuner and mutes. If you don’t have the tools or experience, you might be better off hiring a professional to tune your piano.

Can a piano be too old to tune?

Many old pianos can be tuned. Consult a professional piano tuner to find out if they can tune your piano.

Can a piano be tuned after 20 years?

If you haven’t tuned your piano in 20 years, you can still bring it to a tuner for them to assess and perform a pitch raise.

Why do my piano keys squeak?

If your piano keys are squeaking, it may be because something is stuck between the keys. Or, your piano may be dirty. You may be able to fix your keys. If not, hire a professional to take a look at the problem and perform the repairs.

Should you tip piano tuners?

Tipping piano tuners isn’t customary. If you had a great experience with a piano tuner, you can also show your appreciation by leaving a review on Thumbtack.

What happens if you don't tune a piano?

Tunings can help prevent damage and maintain your piano. When you tune your piano, you’re correcting its pitch. So if you go too long without tuning your piano, the pitch will likely drop — which can add tension to your piano’s structure, according to the Piano Technicians Guild.

Is it worth tuning an old piano?

It may be worth tuning your old piano, especially if it’s highly valued or has sentimental value. Bring your piano to an expert piano tuner. They can assess your instrument and help you determine if it can be restored.

How often should you tune a piano?

Some experts recommend tuning your piano at least two or four times a year, according to the Piano Technicians Guild. You should always see what the manufacturer recommends for your specific piano. And you should schedule additional tunings as needed.

How long does piano tuning take?

Tuning your piano might take a few hours or less. Before your appointment, ask your piano tuner how long the process will take.
